    Nice toad :)
How old is that skink on cold one? And is it in plastic, or is it just primer?

I'm not sure of the age, but it's fairly old judging by the box art XD He's from this box, sold as a single online: [IMG]
It's a metal figure thats just been primed :) a bit easier to see it on the camera this way.

And will you use him as a separate character or will he join a cold one regiment?

5th edition Regiments of the Renown,
I have a set of these as well. ;)
    They are definitely metal.

Regiments of the Renown where unique units that always included a Special Character,
and neither could be fielded without the other, they also had min and max unit sizes.
They could all be fielded with the Dogs or war army, or with certain other armies depending on the unit.

I'm playing AoS, so I have no choice but to use him separately. I'm planning on useing him as a skunk priest :)

Thanks for the info :) I was wandering what they were used for!

Back when GW had lots of class and character.... I had secretly hoped that they would eventually get back to these types of units.

Can't wait to see what you do with this classic... I have the regiment laying about somewhere as well!

Thank you very much :) maybe it's worth it getting myself covered in static grass XD

Hopefully I'll get to painting him early next week! I had planned to start sooner but work surprised me with a working trip to London :S

Your skink priest turned out amazing!

Looking forward to your take on one of Tichi Huchi's Raiders! Great old model with great fluff! (wiki article)

As always, It's been a little while :) Between getting back from work pretty late every day, and having about 50 skinks to build (they sure will be fun to paint :depressed:) I manage to sit down and start painting my raider!

I decided to start off with the base this time. This was mostly because I'm painting the model off-base for once, so I wanted the base to be done before hand so I can glue parts on as I finish them. Something else new is that I actually took pictures during the painting process! Hopefully some of the more experienced among you can point out were I'm being silly or using the wrong colours (being colour blind makes this kind of thing tricky and frustrating at times).

So, first off I decided to use a pretty big base for this one (It's round too....i'm sorry :S). The reason being this guy will probably end up as more of a display piece then actually used in my games. I started with grabbing one of my resin pieces to be the main block of the detail and built up green stuff around it. Little stones were then pushed into the green stuff to hopefully make them look a little more realistic than just having them glued on top.

After all that and dried I glued on sand and used a technique a GW guy taught me, were I painted all the sand with a shade paint to lock the sand in place before adding the under coat to the whole thing. I probably didnt really need to do this seeing as I was spary coating after the sand had been applied, but I had no idea how long it would be until then...so better safe than sorry.

You can probably spot the little footprint were the Cold One will stand :)

    IMG_0328.JPG
The soil is Mournfang for the base, Agrax and a drybrush of Zandri dust. The little rocks turned out be be tricky to paint. I had to dry brush to get the texture, all without getting it on the soil :L I've tried doing the rock first before, but that was just as tricky not getting paint on the rocks!

    IMG_0329.JPG
Did the logs next. I used a grey drybrush to simulate lichen cover.

    IMG_0332.JPG
I painted the vines with a drybrush then painted the bone around it.

    IMG_0344.JPG IMG_0345.JPG
Added all the little grass tufts and plants that I've used on all my bases so far. It might be a little over kill but I think it looks nice enough.

    IMG_0343.JPG
One final shot with the Cold One in place where he's going to be standing :)

    Paints:

    Soil - Mournfang, Agrax, Zandri
Rocks - Dawnstone, Nuln oil, Longbeard
    Log - Rhinox, Stormvermin
Vines - Castellan, Athonian camo, Loren Forest, Straken Green
Bone - Zandri, Agrax, Ushabti, Screaming Skull

I would love to hear what you guys think! Anything I can do better? Hopefully I should get the rest of him done over this weekend...but no promises!

That is an amazing base! Thank you for the step-by-step pictures, it felt like I was watching the base come alive (or dead depending on the way you look at it...). Well done painting the skeleton to create a characterful base!

It looks real cool! And even more impressive for a color blind guy! I admire you, that must have been such a challenge to be able to paint when you only see a scale of greys!

Thank you very much both of you :)
It's definitely the skeleton that makes it. I've been dieing to use that resin price for ages now! Good to finally get it painted.

I'm flattered :) but sorry to disappoint, but I don't see in grey scale! I have protanopia, meaning I can't see red. Anything that's red is actually a shade of green to me! Any other colours though are more or less how you see them.

That's a good question :L I have a sea of grey before me XD I think the choice is between my skinks or my rippers. Both troops I'm using a fair amount so it would be nice to have them painted. I should probably update my first post with a kind of to-do list with all my greys, might help push me to paint them.

maybe rippers would be better since they would be quicker… or fitting the rippers in between two halves (or three thirds) of the skink unit! gotta avoid getting bored lol…

Yeah i'm pretty terrified of the boredom those Skinks will bring...It took my a year to get through just 20 saurus before, and I have 50 skinks to paint O_O

    Looks pretty great, :D
    one bit of feedback:
one more lighter shade of green drybrushed on those grassy bits on the log around the skeleton,
they look a bit flat compared to everything else.
