Hey peeps! Returning player after a 13ish year break here with a (probably noobish question)!

So.. I was looking through the battletome trying to figure out how to build my saurus oldblood on foot and my scar-vet on Carno considering weapon choices and can'take really decide which choices would be the overall best so I figured I'd ask for your opinions.

I haven't gotten around to learn about possible buffs and such yet so input on that is also very welcome.

There's not really a superior option.
For example, pick the scarvet on carno, and look at it in a vacuum (aka without bonuses from other units)

The warblade and the warspear both have 6 Attacks:
the blade will hit (on average) 4 times, wounding 3 times, no rend, 1" range.
the spear will hit 3 times, wounding 2 times, -1 rend, 2" range.
the spear usually is a little better, due to range and rend, but sometime those advantages will be negated by rend immunity or by you being already in contact with the opponent.

The greatblade will hit 1-2 times, wounding at least 1, -1 rend but 2 dam.
the greatblade counts more on luck: it can give you a better result than the spear, or a worse one, however there is not a so big difference.

All in all, i'd go with the one that is visually more appealing! :D

these heroes don't have a weapon option that is clearly superior to the other ones, while other units do have it (for example, I don't think you'll ever see tomb guards with halberds instead of blades)

I felt what killer angel said for old blood on scar vet when reading stats but the old blood on foot really seems to have way different potentials with the weapons ?
I didn't really pay attention to them before this post as I haven't made a list with him yet but it really seems like a tough choice ?

Yeah, the maul is similar to the greatblade: better to hit, worse to wound, same rend, save average damage... the greatblade's damage is always the same, and the maul is more random.

Differences are negligible, and there's not an option that is objectively superior. It goes more to personal tastes, IMO.

Well I prefer the spear on the Scar vet on Carnosaur, but only when I give him the Order +1 damage item: 6 attacks with 2 damage and -1 rend? Yes please :)

It really comes down to visual appeal, or specific playstyle, or what your old model had on it. Will you make good use of the 2" range on the spear? Then go for it. If you don't need that then the warblade would probably be sufficient.

    Thanks for the replies! :)
I will probably not need 2" range but the spear looks pretty badass...
I will probably go for the sword though considering everything.
Oldblood however, I think I will do some testing with and see where my luck leaves me!

Well if you take the spear on the Scar veteran, remember to give him the +1 damage item on it. His damage will go from 6 possible wounds to 12 possible wounds :)

I'll need all the dmg I can get considering my "dear" friend builds his army around archaeon.. o_O

    Good guy Killer Angel! :D

But yeah, the Relic blade item gives you +1 damage on one weapon. The Scar Veteran gets 6 attacks with his spear, which has 4+ to hit, 3+ to wound, and -1 Rend. I'd say the Spear in combination with that item is solid!

I use the great blade on my scar vet with the legendary fighter trait and quicksilver potion. That gives him 4 attacks at -1 rend and 2 damage with the option of going first in any combat phase once per battle. Does wonders against any cheeky bastard that is grinning when their beat stick charges the scar vet.

Is the scar-vet a better choice than the Oldblood for the carnosaur build?
I saw that they share the leg and half the body so magneting them seems to be impossible.. o_O

Well the Scar veteran works better when it comes to buffing your allies, plus he has a shield that negates -1 rend.

For instance, say I wanted to make a build like this:

    Warrior Heart
Scar Veteran on Carnosaur: 260 (General, Relic blade item on spear, Charge or Defender command trait)
    Loremaster: 100
Celestial Hurricanum: 320 (phoenix stone item)
    Starseer: 160
    Skink Priest: 100

Unit of 15 Chameleon Skinks: 360

    Sunclaw Starhost: 80
    Sunblood: 120
    Unit of 40 Warriors: 400
    Unit of 10 Warriors: 100
    Unit of 10 Warriors: 100

    Total point cost: 1980

Your Scar Veteran could buff your 40 Warrior stack with his command. His command lets you gain another attack on a hit roll of 6 or more. Now, the 40 Warrior stack gains a +1 to hit when they have 20+ models, and an extra attack if they have 30+ models with their spear, as well as an extra bite attack thanks to the Sunclaw Starhost. Also, if you put your Celestial Hurricanum near them (which has a auro buff that gives +1 to hit to order units) they will get a total of 2+ to hit. Which means that on a hit dice roll of 4 to 6 you will gain an automatic free extra attack!

Combine that with the Loremaster's hand of glory, and you will have a lot of chance to get these extra attacks. Also, if you give your Warriors spears, you can first attack with their bite attacks, and then if the opponent moves away the front enemy units to try and deny your main weapon's attack, you can more easily pile in again.

Also, if you place your stack of 40 Warriors just 2" behind your 2x 10 Warrior stacks, I believe you can attack from behind your 2x 10 Warrior stacks as long as you spread them out a little. This means that those 2 stacks will soak up the damage, keeping your main stack as healthy as possible.
And if you place your Curse of fates from your Starseer on your Skink Priest, you have a higher chance to activating his protective aura buff. Should you still fail, you can (hopefully) use one of the Starseer's rerolls to correct that. The Skink Priest gives a 8" aura, and as long as one model of a unit is within that aura, you can rerolls failed charge, run, and even save rolls.

Put a Mythic shield from your Celestial Hurricanum on one of the 2x 10 Warrior stacks, and you have a decently strong front defensive line.

Simply put: The Oldblood on Carnosaur is stronger as a single model, but the Scar Veteran on Carnosaur is stronger when it comes to buffing a powerfull Saurus unit, such as a 40 Warriors stack.

Ah, I see! So then it would be foolish to make an oldblood instead of a scarvet considering that saurus units are a big part of seraphon.
I will mostly be running a 40 warriors and 2x20 guards and then add in knights if I play with higher points.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Honestly, either one is fine and a worthwhile unit to have. Which one you need depends on your army and your playstyle.

The Oldblood gives a range attack and a little more damage per attack. His command ability is focused on Saurus heroes, so he works best as a general for an army with several Saurus heroes. The downside is, his defense is weaker due to his lack of stardrake shield.

The Scarvet, on the other hand, has the better defense, but loses the range attack and some damage output. His command ability buffs a single unit of Saurus.

It depends on your playstyle. For me, I prefer the Scarvet, but could see the Oldblood as a glass cannon and/or used to sit back and buff the other heroes in a bloodclaw starhost.
