Hi everyone - Posted down in the general hobby thread, but this is a much better place for my post.

I have a ton of Seraphon, but I just cant seem to be motivated to paint them.

Those of you who do this regularly... what is your motivation? any tips you recommend trying?

I just have so much stuff that every time I think about it i just get overwhelmed and push it off :(

I try to put a lot of effort and time into the models whereas i know those who block in two colors and dip them in wash and call it a day.

Looking for ideas about how you all do it!

The best motivation is to enter a painting competition!

For myself, I found that I like to pick a one-off model like a salamander or a kroxigor and start there. With only one model you can experiment with colors and techniques a little bit without feeling pressured to get the model done.

After that, I look to painting a complete unit. Something small like 10 skinks. This and anything with more numbers I do like an assembly line. Base coat everything, paint all the scales, paint all the gold or silver bits, etc.

Watching a painting tutorial video helps a bunch too!

I've painted around 500 models since my return.

First thing, why are you painting, to play or to display?

To Play, paint as fast as you can with minimum effort they still look good on the table, spend more time on focal models, heros, monsters etc.

Keep only the models you are working on out put the rest where you can't see them.

Put some tunes on and get into a routine off base, wash, drybrush repeat.

Once you finish a unit base it and photo it upload it then put it away until you play, rinse repeat, people commenting on your work is a massive motivation tool, use it to your advantage, interact with other painters, look what I did with the Krox I asked in poll what colour scheme I should use, stuff like that will have you blasting through your models.

Heres one for you, start a thread "paint a unit in 2 weeks" and see if anyone jumps in and contributes, I bet they will.

It's a bit like running, short runs bring down your times for longer distance, painting models fast helps you paint more precise when you want to take longer.

Good luck, but post pics now and that will get the ball rolling, trust me.

My main motivation is to play, but when i pick up models to examine them, I am usually very critical of my own stuff. I'll post a couple of them here.

I am usually pretty slow, which is where I think a lot of my overwhelming feelings come into play. I really like your suggestions so far. I was thinking about posting a painting thread / blog to keep me motivated, so I'm glad you share that opinion!

Really like the running analogy :)

Here are a couple of models so you can see my style.

A way I find that works is to paint five or so in one go in a batch. That way you get a few done quickly that can be used to play amongst the grays (if you don't mind playing with grays). They also help to motivate you to paint the rest as you get to see how they are going to look without having a horde of half painted minis :)

I feel you I have not had the motivation to paint in the last few months my self (baring a few commissions) but for me its manly cuz I have been working on to many big projects and kitbashing lots of smaller projects. I do echo @Crowsfoot statement posting my work on this sight has been a massive help to get me to continue this hobby and push my self further in my projects. basically post all progress great motivation and it helps others who look at your work to try new things ^_^

Me and my friends try to get together for painting, it helps me get through the parts I find tiresome. I try to fokus on the "boring" stuff when I am with them so that I am more motivated to do the fun stuff alone. Also try to switch up the way you paint, maybe try to paint a model using a technique you're not used to?

And as many before me have stated, start a blog, those models look fantastic!

Yes! Start a blog! That helps a lot!
And look at other people's blogs... that helps, too.

And don't worry if you sometimes feel unmotivated... there are always also some outside-the-hobby-conditions that influence the motivation to the different parts of the hobby... for example I'm at the moment not really motivated to paint, cause of real world trouble around me... though while writing about it I feel my mojo starting to flow again... ;)

Nice! I'm hoping my mojo starts flowing too. I've been watching some Next Level Painting stuff trying to pump myself up to give it a go tonight! I'll be sure to try to document and if I actually get going I'll try to start a painting plog.

Thank you for all the suggestions and votes of confidence!

I find that leaving my models and paints out motivates me to paint them,
even if it's just for like 5 minute paint break between walk between the living room and the kitchen.
(that's where my paint station is)

You're probably a tougher critic of your own work then anyone here will be . That's my experience.

I also have too much stuff, one thing I do is try to limit how many projects I have on the go at one time (current limit 3 units/heros/monsters).

Find some podcasts, streams, shows etc that you like to enjoy while you paint.
