Hey there! I still play 8th edition with several friends and while I do well against various armies like Tomb Kings, Wood Elves, Dark Elves, and Empire, I have never been able to crack the Ogre meat bus that one of my friends usually brings. Here is an army list I usually bring and I was wondering if anyone had any pointers on what to change in order to deal with Ogres. Thanks so much!

    Lords

Slaan w/Lore of High Magic, BSB, Standard of Disciipline, Harmonic Convergence, Focus of Mystery, Becalming Cogitation and Channeling Staff

    Heroes

Scar Vet on Carnosaur w/Sword of Might, Gambler's Armor, Shield, Loping Stride

Skink Priest w/Dispel Scroll and Lore of Heavens (sometimes Beasts, depends)

    Core

34 Saurus Warriors FC (this number varies, usually 30+)
    10 Skink Skirmishers
    10 Skink Skirmishers

    Special

    20 Temple Guard FC

    Rare

    Ancient Stegadon w/Sharpened Horns

    Total: 1998 Points

I also am getting a lot cheap from a friend soon which will give me some chameleon skinks, some CoC, a few terradon riders, only 2 though, and enough kroxigor to field a unit of 5, looking to get a sixth one soon. I also have an oldblood on foot, and my scar vet on carnosaur can double as an Oldblood on one instead, as well as an extra skink priest and about 30 additional saurus warriors. Thanks in advance!

I like your army. If you're looking to change a few things up, perhaps try the Scar Vet on a Cold One instead. There is a really good thread on cowboy builds in the tactics section. Cruise through the tactica index and see what I mean.

With leftover points from your Scar Vet I would then look at either upping the number of Saurus, maybe go for two blocks of 24, or invest in a cavalry bus for your cowboy. Of course you'll have to fiddle around with your other units, but it would be a start.

Our cavalry hits like a train, can't be stomped, and usually outmatches anything in the Ogre army. Your only downfall now is cannons, so maybe look at chameleon skinks as well.

Do you think any of that is viable?

What kind of list does he usually run?

Thanks a bunch yea my only scar vet on a CO needs a lot of TLC, but I will probably convert some of the COC to help with that and try to give him a bus too, never used our cavalry so I'm interested to try it out. I wanna see how the chameleon skinks do as well so thanks for that suggestion. As for the warriors I've had mixed results with multiple blocks but I'm down to try it since I've never attempted it against ogres.

He normally runs a meat bus of 9 or 12 iron guts, butcher, tyrant, all that fun stuff in it, then a unit of lead belchers, a chaff unit of Noblars, usually a cannon, and sometimes a Thundertusk, as well as some of the sabertooth cats for more chaff. I can normally deal with everything except the meat bus, I've tried flanking it with saurus while buffed temple guard try to hold it up, ive thrown kroxi at it too, it just busts through everything I throw at it lol, magic, shooting, and combat wise. Thanks for the tips though!

yea I think I was 0-8 vs Ogres...
    it's such a tough matchup.

Cold one Cav is one of the few units that where any good vs them,
be sure to take some cold one scar-vets or cold ones in the units as well.
and give them the best gear.

might be worth throwing some ripperdactyls against his belchers.
be sure they are stuck in with another unit first so they don't stand and shoot.

also leave the salamanders home, they are pretty useless against ogres.

Maybe try out Light or Life magic first. I've been successful with a buffed up TG block against their deathstar a few times in the past. Of course it's not as nice as we had it with the 7th edition book, but the buffs are normally not to hard to get in your arsenal.

And yes I agree, their chaff is pretty easy to deal with.

I can think of two things off the top of my head that you might want to try out:

    1. Purple Sun
    - like us, Ogres don't like the Purple Sun. One good casting could cripple the unit.
    • Ogres have low initiative
    • Purple Sun kills 3+ wound models as easily as it does 1 wound models
    • The Rune Maw magic item can't protect against it
    • you can always utilize a flying Skink arcane vassal to cast through in order to get the perfect range/angle

    2. "Swiss Army Knife" Stubborn Oldblood
    - why kill it when you can much more easily neutralize it?
    • simply tie up the unit so it can't harm your army
    • aim for a defensive stubborn Oldblood. Cold One, 4+ ward, 1+ armor, crown of command + what ever else you prefer.
    • works even better if backed up by a Lore of Life or High Magic Slann to heal any wounds that slip through
    • once you hold up the unit (using only a fraction of the unit's points cost to do so), you should be able to sweep up the rest of his army for the win

Thank you all for the suggestions and help, I really like that Swiss Army Knife Oldblood idea, and I'll definitely try the CoC and maybe that light/life slaan too, I like the purple sun idea but it's a risk since you might not get it, it's why I like having loremaster High Magic, but I could try to switch out for it during the game. Unfortunately I only have 2 terradons right now so the ripperdactyls will have to stay grounded for now, but I'm definitely gonna try some of this thanks!
