Having been convinced to buy Total War – Warhammer by my son after watching a number of replays (including a Lizardmen mod) we’ve decided to dust off our WFB (8th ed) models and have a game. My trusty Lizardmen against his heinous Beastmen.

Given we’re a bit rusty on the rules, we’re only playing 1600 points.

    This is my army:

    Lords

Oldblood, crown of command, gamblers armour, talisman of preservation, great weapon.

    Heroes

Scar Vet, BSB, Armour of Destiny, HW & Shield.

    Tetto eko

    Core

    22 Saurus Warriors, full command

    10 skink skirmishers, javelins

    10 skink skirmishers, javelins

    Special

    3 Kroxigor

21 Temple Guard, full command, razor banner

    Rare

    Salamander plus snack

    Total 1594

Six points to spare. Probably go for a cheap magic weapon for the TG Revered Guardian, unless any one can suggest a better use?

Oldblood and Scarvet are both on foot, but have 2+/4++ saves, and OB has Crown of Command benefits.

Probably put them both in TG. Any other suggestions?

I’m expecting to meet some ungor raiders, 2/3 blocks of Gors (possibly one in Beastmen Ambush), a Bray Shaman, and some minotaurs, with Doombull and/or Bestigors.

He doesn’t have razorgors / Tuskgors etc.

Not sure how many minotaurs he’ll take, 3 or possibly 6 (he likes them!)

My plan at the moment is to bait said (frenzied) minotaurs with skinks, then counter-charge with kroxigors and possibly TG or Saurus together (one in flank hopefully).

The rest of the army will deal with his (hopefully!) with the Salamander roasting more than a few if we’re lucky.

    Thoughts?

Salamanders should work best on his small based rank and file units, (gors I think),
using salamanders against ogre sized units is generally a bad idea.
Better off shooting those with skinks.

Looks like a good list! Make sure you get the Heavens buffs on to your unit taking on the minotaurs.

Have you any worries about facing the Doombull of Doom? Beasties can make a serious CC character, rivaling our best. Plus it can stomp. If he does bring it, plan on throwing skinks at him. Poison will serve much better than brute force.

Played the game last night. To my surprise, no minotaurs. 2 large blocks of gors (c30) a small / medium one of 15/20 Beastigors, three units of ungor raiders and giant (just because!). He had a beastlord and some other character, with quite a few magic items.

I did change my list slightly - Reduced the number of saurus and took an extra skink skirmisher unit.

Game was over by end of T3.

T2 I routed a unit of gors with my charging krox - He rolled a 3 for the panic, almost couldn't fail to catch, and didn't (fail that is). That was one flank wide open to the krox unit and two units of skirmishers.

The salamander took a number of gors and beastigors out over two turns, leaving the latter with just 6 by T3.

T2 The saurus block was charge by both the giant and the other block of gors. Two turns of combat they were still going strong.

At end of T3 I did actually lose the OB General in a challenge against his beastlord. I managed to whiff 3 4++ rolls. I had taken him doen to 1 wound previously though. Despite this there were just too many lizardmen and we called it given the TG were about to kill the giant with a flank charge which would overrun into the flank of the gors. The last 6 beastigors would have been charged by the kroxigors (one was down a wound or two but that was it).
The sallie and skirmishers would have cleaned up the ungor raiders.

Sounds easy, but I have to admit my luck (apart from the OB) was pretty good, especially with saving rolls. For example, 5+ armour save on saurus. 7 rolls to save. 4 made on 5+. Then 6+ parry. Made all 3 parry saves. I suppose karma is that the OB dies, but by then it was too late for my lad.
He also made a couple of mistakes - His deployment wasn't the best and he could/should have been a bit more aggressive with his ungor raiders IMO. Particularly on my left flank. he had two units there, against one of skink skirmishers. He just stood at long range and shot. While the rolls were the same for both of us (6 to hit) mine were auto wounding given poisoned. I felt he needed to shorten the range and have a better chance of hitting.

We're going to do a re-run, maybe Monday night but likely different army lists - I know he's changed his. I am REALLY expecting minotaurs and possibly a chariot or two and then some razorgors/tuskgors. I learnt quite quickly the value of chaff (having been taught many lessons at our local club) - I think he's beginning to catch up in that regard.

Next time might not be so easy.

Yes I was planning on trying to pull him out of position with skinks due to frenzy and get a few wounds with poison and/or hit him in the flank with the kroxies / TG.

I suspect out next game (see above) will be a different proposition and I can see how well I can chaff them up.

We've played many times previously and at 2400 he's often brought 6/9/12 (!) minotaurs with kitted up doom bull. It's about 50/50 between us when he takes them. He also plays Dark Elves, and the win rate is heavily in his favour between the DE and my Lizardmen!
