That depends on your painting skills.
Ideally some blending between normal colors and
like a bright color would be nice effect to make something appear magical.

    THIS GENERAL EFFECT...

Yea that's the idea, but you can do this with a regular brush and some practice.

What if you use a bloodclaw? Then you could use both. Going to need one more.

I like the ideas you have!

I have done similar things but for my unit fillers:
    warden201705_unit fillers 15.jpg

    Currently the collection stands at:

    - Snake Statue
    - Two Saurus Totem-banners sticking out of a rock
    - Native Trap
    - Curse marker with skulls
    - Pile of treasure (not pictured)

There are a lots of similar ideas from the Lustria Campaign book as well:

    - Carniverous plants
    - Lashworm tails (made out of extra Skaven tails)
    - Poisonous mushrooms
    - Vermin swarms (the pic shows a skull in amougnst the critters)
    - Quicksand (depicted by a patch of sand with the hat of one unfortunate victum on top)

Not exactly spell markers, but may still be useful for certain events.

If you want something to look almost airbrushed or have a nice fade/transition, I recommend using some glaze medium (I've mostly been using GW's Lahmian Medium, but I just got Vallejo's Glaze Medium and it's awesome) to thin your paints without changing their viscosity and build up color in semi-transparent layers. Doing this with water is a bit trickier, since each layer won't go over the mini's surface evenly unless you thin it just right and apply it carefully--you'll get "bald spots" where less pigment accumulated and thicker spots in other areas.

I'll have to give this a try I have them painted in standard colours. But still wish to give them a mystic feel to them as they are spells and should be noticed by my opponent. Also I must build a round marker as sometimes I find we lose track of who went first

It's a 2004 campaign expansion for WHFB 6th edition simply titled Lustria. TONS of really cool rules and ideas in it! Makes me sad I can't play any of it...unless I somehow adapt it to AoS--you know, I might just do that; better than moping about missing out! :D

I *only* play Age of Sigmar. I started out in this hobby a month or so ago (and have since started to drown in awesome space lizards) though I had been following the Warhammer games and universe for years. What I meant is that I missed out on playing the old content--but it'd be nice if I could adapt/homebrew those neat ideas for my friendly games with friends and family. In fact, I've already started brewing up a Lustria campaign that combines that old book with the new skirmish rules.

I truly hope that GW finds a nice middle ground for AoS's next edition/revision that even the most die-hard WHFB can enjoy alongside the newer AoS crowd. I, at least, would love to have more depth as far as army building (actually fine-tuning equipment per model and such) and magic is concerned. I'm pretty hopeful this could happen given 40k 8th's reasonably streamlined but deep ruleset and it's almost assured success--I mean, I've heard nothing but good comments on the changes and they even got me lined up to get the new starter set, and I had never really given 40k much thought before.

Maybe, but I am not holding my breath.

The only slight hope I have is that once Total War Warhammer is finally complete (all three parts published) it will generate enough of a fanbase or be such a resounding success that causes GW to consider bringing the Old World back, maybe with a new flavor or something. Not sure how though, they basically blew it up, but then again GW has made huge changes to the fluff before.
