Progress! These are now as finished as they're going to be until I get some more stuff painted so I can batch dip them in quickshade. I'm still undecided on bases - originally I based all my 40k stuff with white gravel and tufts of grass and debris scattered around, but I'm gradually rebasing my Chaos Marines and Imperial Assassins with the new urban bases GW released (I wanted to rebase them on 32mm anyway). I have some Khorne and Tzeentch daemons to paint as well, so I'm thinking of doing god-specific bases but I'm just not sure how to do Nurgle (or Slaanesh, but who cares about that dude(tte))

Cool! Regarting the bases you can just paint them do they represent dirty water. Or if you want to add some depth you could sculpt something like bubbles and such, and then paint them in discusting colurs

I'm leaning towards gross swampy ground with dirty water and bits of corpses and such things, I just don't have the materials for it right now as a lot of my hobby stuff is in storage.

I've started work on a test model for a new colour scheme for my chaos army. Nothing to get excited about yet but hopefully I can get some more done over the next few days and have something worth posting.

I've had a very productive weekend hobby-wise. Finished assembling my half of the Dark Imperium box,and got the base coat, first layer and first wash on my death guard. I've never been interested in Nurgle until now, but the models in the Dark Imperium box are REALLY nice.

It's a bit of a "concept army" (if I'm using the term correctly) so I'm really hoping they don't turn out rubbish. They'll essentially all be rusty. Lots and lots of rust. I'm following a rough guide I've yanked from an Ork blog, and using some of the methods I applied to the Plaguebearers banner. The base being brown and orange is a big departure from my other method, I'm very much outside my comfort zone.

Flesh will be done to match my Plaguebearers.

This project probably won't expand beyond the models in the Dark Imperium box but this progress is very exciting (and so far very fast!) so who knows. I've always liked that Glottkin model....

Well I just did a drybrush of Leadbelcher, now they look a bit TOO metallic (I may have been a bit heavy handed...) so I might go back over them with some Ryza Rust again to tone it down, this time jabbing it on with a crusty old brush. A sepia wash should make it a bit browner again too. We'll see, I'm kinda winging it at this point and have never really painted anything like this before so it's all experimental.

My beloved Dwarf Bronze ran out while I was painting the trim on one marine, so I'm trying to work out an alternative without necessitating buying more paint. I'm going to give Balthazar Gold a try and see how it looks but it seems a tad dark. Hopefully it won't matter too much, I'm going to drown the bronze in Nilakh Oxide anyway.

I you are going to apply rust so thickly remember to apply a varnish once you've finished, or your death guard will literally fall apart on the battlefield :p
I also recommend you to make a paste out of rust-coloured pigments and gloss varnish and apply globs on, so you get a really rusty rust effect :joyful:;)

Thanks for the tips @Jorgik ! I'm on a very VERY strict budget (as you'll see in a moment) so the pigments probably won't happen, at least not now.

New pics - showing my Leadbelcher work from previously and the beginnings of the brass trim. Like I said earlier, I ran out of bronze paint and I don't have any appropriate alternatives... but my wife did! Behold the marvelous work of the metallic sharpie pen!

It looks pretty dull, and it's very imprecise work (those pens are chunky!) but I think with some highlights and washes it will look respectable.

A few days late, but I did a thing.

Yeah I see the mould line, and it actually had another layer of gold/brass done after this pic was taken but it doesn't look significantly different so I didn't bother taking a new one.

    @Crowsfoot how did you guess?!

I've done a bit more since then and touched up the gold and brass on my Drone but again nothing worth taking a photo of. Only got my Plague Marine Champion, Plaguecaster and Lord of Contagion to do the metals on before starting on the wash and other details.

Got a new method in mind for the fleshtone which is similar to my Plaguebearers but I need a few more washes before I can pull it off.

EDIT: Thought I'd just add to this post rather than make a new one.

I've started work on the horns and flesh. Pics didn't turn out great because of crappy lighting but I'll be working on it again tonight. I'm pleased to say it's all coming together now I've started on the details. If all goes well I should have everything bar the Poxwalkers ready for the Fate of Konor event I'm going to on Saturday.

    Pictures!

Still a while to go. Need to do highlights on the horn, a few more layers on the flesh and all the fiddly little details. Still undecided on what colour to do the cloth. I was originally thinking green but now I'm considering black or cream.

Fluke really. My method was "throw paint at it and see what sticks". I have a very old range of paints with a few new additions, so you might find it hard to get an exact match.

    Started with a black primer
Bascoated with Vallejo Dark Earth using an airbrush
Several heavy drybrushes of Calthan Brown. It's an older GW paint and I don't think there's an equivalent. It's kind of a less red Mournfang brown.
I used a wash at this point but can't remember which one. Would have been Ogryn Flesh or Badab Black.
Go to town with Ryza Rust
Drybrush Boltgun Metal, but not the entire model.
