The green gem looks a bit too much Skaven to me but that's really personal taste, it does look cool.

    About the ladybug Basti itself:
I think it looks pretty good already.
Will you use gloss varnish on him?
I think it can look awesome on Bastiladons I'm general, especially when using very bright colors such as your red and white.

Oh I see now, more of an ivory than a pure white but looking forward to seeing how it comes out!

Indeed... you have to see the white as a kind of undercoat... I thought it might be easier to tone it down later... also the red is quite strong...
That's true... looks more like warp stone... we'll see if I stick with the green or change the color while progressing... also I'm still unsure about the color/material of the rest of the engine... metal? Which? Stone? Wood? Or any combination of these?

For me the engine looks like it is stone or metal. I went for metal with mine. (I am painting it right now in fact).

Some progress... washed the mephiston red basecoat with Vallejo red wash... redid the mephiston on the single scales and highlighted the front shell with evil sun scarlet...
    20180121_012414.jpg 20180121_012435.jpg 20180121_012446.jpg
Also did something on the crystal... don't ask what... I only know that there was some moot green involved... alongside Vallejo livery green, some yellow, white scar, coelia greenshade... biel-tan green and waywatcher green... and drybrushing... lots of drybrushing... final step was a mixture of livery green and glaze medium... 1:4...
    20180121_012536.jpg
And for the fun of it... monster and engine assembled... well... the engine placed loosely on the back of the basti...

Little update: decided to go all lady bug and am now planning on making the skinks look like the larvae of said insect...
Here's the first try... basecoat only...
    20180122_134354.jpg 20180122_134333.jpg
The other scales will be black...
Also this decision makers the question of which part of my forces the model belongs to obsolete... the grey skins...

Again a very unique paint scheme. They will also have a good contrast to the red Basti. Looks like it could work.

Thanks! Uniqueness was one of the goals for this paint job... ;)
    Here more progress:

Found a tutorial for ice crystal over at coolminiornot... tried to convert it to green...
Basecoat was moot green... then I layered two coats of a mixture of livery green and moot green with some glaze medium... first was 1/1/2 second 2/1/3... then I did the edges with pure livery green and glazed with waywatcher...
    20180122_235741.jpg 20180122_235748.jpg 20180122_235809.jpg
Not completely finished yet... but I feel like I'm in a good way...
And again for the fun of it: loosely assembled the whole model...

Still unsure about the rest of the engine, so opinions welcome!

Hmmm I did mine metallic (bronze) but I think that would look a bit out of place on yours.
Maybe you can make it look like grey stone that has a metal frame and hinges.

Stone looks really good, reminds me of warpstone! For the engine itself, maybe something like a lotus sitting on the back of a giant lady bug? I've always thought bastilodons would make perfect venusaurs....

What if you painted the engine (bronze or stone, your choice), and then made the crystal "glow" by washing the inside panels of the engine with various greens?

Since it does look like a giant Ladybug, maybe you could make the panels look like wings?

Indeed something I had in mind, too...
That's a nice idea... hmmm... have to google lady bug wings... they have a slight pattern on them... though most parts are transparent... guess I'll have to think of ways to paint transparent... or switch to light grey or something...

You could look at Ritual's wings on his Plague Drone things. That might give you some headway.

Do you want me to get some color shifting paint or to start a Nurgle army?
Both things I consider now... ;)
