The possibilities of this combination are staggering. Please let it be the Old Republic!! Revan? Bane? Even if it isn't, I have great faith in these two as they did such an amazing job on Game of Thrones!

Meh. GoT is ....OK I guess, there are worse shows but I really don't like how some stuff is handled.
I hope Star Wars does not go into that direction at all.

Although... they do have no sense of scale nor speed nor distance and like to have gigantic plot holes.... Perfect for Star Wars I guess.

Looks intriguing, but I just hope they won't go down the same old 'Rebels vs Empire' way. I imagine they probably won't, just as with Rian Johnson's new trilogy being separate.

Hmmm I don't know. Star Wars has almost always been Good vs. Evil. Whether it is Old Republic against Sith Empire or new Republic against First Order or Rebellion vs. Empire.

...I would like to see something else as well though. Maybe a large crime syndicate as the enemy and some Jedi fighting it... Rise of the Hutt Cartell or something.
    Or maybe the Mandalorian Wars.

    In any case: Lightsaber fights.

I mean that I'm hoping for more Republic vs anything. I really disliked the idea of the Rebels being given such a fanbase until Rogue One arrived. Rogue One really opened my eyes to the Rebellion. Before that, I always thought that they were terrorists. It was only when I saw the brutality of Saw Gerrera's henchmen that I found that I was blaming the wrong group...

    Wait, what???
I cannot tell if you are joking or not. Sorry if you are, then disregard this post.

Maybe it has to do with age, but roughly speaking until very recently (around year 2001) "Rebel" was much more likely perceived as a positive term, associated with terrorists war criminals, fighters for freedom and independence, like Ernesto "Che" Guevara, George Washington, or so, and "Empire" was negative to anyone except some old Englishmen.
Anyone seeing the Original Trilogy in the 70s, 80s or 90s would have associated The Empire in Star Wars with Nazis or the like, and the Rebels as the clearly good guys. They are never shown as attacking non-military targets (while the Empire does that) and being supported by civilians feeling the oppression by the Empire.

For many people (including me) the Saw Guerrera character actually works the other way round. He is much more of a terrorist, and that people like Mon Mothma or Leia would even consider working with him despite his aggressive and inhuman stance (he happily accepts civilian casualties as collateral damage when fighting the Empire) is something that is in conflict with the values the Rebellion stands for.

Exactly, I realise this now that I've seen Rogue One - it's become a lot more interesting than what had been presented in the OT - Saw Gerrera claims he is a Rebel, but he doesn't seem to care that innocents get harmed by his actions, and Mon Mothma and Bail Organa see him as giving the main Alliance a bad name because many believe that Gerrera's mob were part of the Rebellion. This then sparked some hatred for the Rebellion because some thought they were going to bring the chaos of the Clone Wars back to the galaxy, and these folk thought that though the Empire were evil they also provided order and stability. Rogue One made the Rebels' situation interesting - they had to try to prove to the people that they could provide both freedom and stability to the galaxy.

Hold on a minute, the British Empire was (and still is) the largest empire the world has ever seen, and, like it or not, we brought order and stability to many parts of the world like India. Now that they've become independent again they've become a complete rabble again. We instilled discipline into them and now they've thrown it away. Although America doesn't understand this. George Washington was a traitor to the British forces, and his rebellion were more evil than the British. They were horrible to the Indians, which is why most of them fought on the British side in the War of Independence. In any case, the Americans only won because the French helped them, and they had an army much bigger than the British army, and the French only helped the Americans because they hated our guts and wanted any excuse to duff us over. So the Americans have really got the French to thank for their independence.

Ok, ok. It isn't only old Britons that really think an Empire is something good. ;) :D

Joke aside: Imperialism didn't only bring order and stability, it did bring death. To millions of innocents whenever they were opposed to the empire's interests. That's not only the British Empire though, it is true for all the empires of that time.
The "order" that empires brought to the world usually meant oppression, the destruction of native culture, robbing natural resources, destroying the livelihood of those areas of the world, and it even created ideas like concentration camps (Boer War for example) and enforced drug traffic (Opium Wars).
It is correct that some of the former colonies did not do well after the Empire went away. That's just natural because they had been put into a new age without warning and without growing into it, and had never been taught how to do anything themselves. Also the empires destroyed whatever order there had been previously.
Nevertheless some of them seem to be just fine, like several states in Oceania, Africa, Asia and both Americas which were previously French, British, German, Spanish, or Portugese territories.

So....yeah. Order may be the correct word, but actually countries like India were pretty orderly already before the Europeans went there.

Touche - The Roman Empire was just as bad - they did bring military might, lasting structures, clever inventions and a (fairly) stable government, but they also destroyed native culture, assimilated other people's religions into their own and then forced them to convert to Christianity and had many thousands, if not millions of people and animals slaughtered in arenas for other people's enjoyment.

It is not just the fault of their occupier - it is their own fault as well. For instance, India are trying to initiate a space program to try and compete with other countries like China and America yet they haven't sorted their basic society out, as there are thousands of homeless people sleeping on station platforms and stuff over there. They really need to sort themselves out now that they are on their own.

Agreed - Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, e.t.c. are former British provinces that have done well for themselves - I was just using India as an example that some former provinces have become lazy and have degraded since their order brought by thier occupiers has disappeared. Such states have become like that because of their own laziness, and should try to be more like the other states that have done well for themselves.

All valid points. Although I think India's problem is.... much more complex than that.

Bottom line: "Empires are bad mkay". I shudder when I think of what the German Empire did during that time. When talking about atrocities of our past we often only mention Nazis (and they were the worst I guess), but forgetting that before Nazis even became a thing our great-grandfathers happily murdered Africans in Namibia for example.

What the heck has happened to my beautiful Star Wars thread?!!? :rage:

Oh well.... want to know the difference between Rebels and Terrorists? It depends who wins and whose side you are on. History is written by the victors. One man's villain is another man's hero.

I think it isn't THAT simple, but.... close enough I guess.

    Anyway, back to Star Wars:
I think I would like to see more of the Old Republic, perhaps the return of some Legends stuff that was pretty good, maybe in some slightly more streamlined form.

It is a simplification no doubt, but at the heart of it, it is true.

My top pick would be a story about Darth Bane. Darth Reven would be interesting too. Anything taking place in the Old Republic would be fantastic.

I agree with you on the inclusion of Legends material. The Expanded Universe had some really great content (and admittedly some not so great stuff). Picking out and utilizing some of the best stuff would be a great start for this new series.

Hmmm.... Imagine a spinoff movie called "The First Jedi", with people fighting using Lightsabers that still have a cable attached to an anergy backpack and such stuff, and somebody writes the books that Luke had in his tree house. :D

Hahaha... no thanks. Let's just stick with the current iterations of lightsabers!
