In many sports, the Olympic gold medalist's stats 40 years ago are on par with the minimum requirements to qualify for the Olympics at all.

I think the bottom stories on this contest are on par with the top stories of earliest contests. I had to use very nitpicky criteria to thin out my picks of stories to only vote for two.

Now, you only have to decide the winner of the Scalenex cup... ;)

That will have to wait. Of the "contenders," one of them is disqualified for being written by me, and I don't intend to reveal my identity until the contest is over, or at least one piece is so far ahead in he polls it cannot realistically be toppled. Right now the leading piece has a narrow lead.

Dirge is the sort of topic I could see myself tackling. That sort of brief piece trying to illuminate something, in this case the hopelessness of a final stand. It captures what is fleeting in the human condition. It could be a ballard. Simple but that works for it. Great stuff.

Splashing of spawning is hard to comment on. So original it's difficult to "compare". I liked it. I didn't love it like some of the pieces. But I always appreciate authors swinging for the fences - it's how great writing happens.

    Here comes the sun

Once again I didn't quite 'get' it.
It can be hard when writing a story. You are so close to it, what looks subtle might be hidden. But you want it subtle of course.

I voted for song of freedom and time to remember.

Looks like my vote has mixed it up.a bit!

PS. Author of dirge, yours deserves more than 1 vote

I know it will be of small consolation to the author, but I tend to agree.

Me too, though I'm glad I didn't win because then I would have to come up with the next topic.

No I didn't...your word against mine....

I find it interesting how I always end up voting for the same authors

Also when I participated I would have usually have the same people vote for me

So you just vote for yourself? Shame.

Conratulations @Infinity Turtle, well played. Unless you count your ukelele skills.

And now, the real question: who's the winner of the much prized Scalenex cup?

You win it. There was a very tight spread between the top contenders of the Scalenex Cup but "A Time to Remember" barely edged out "Splashing of Spawning" and "Dirge."
