Hello all, i have a question for you... i do not play Lizardmen myself but i am working on a project that i may share hereabouts soon ... i need to know - can Lizardmen swim at sea ... between continent? Up the coast of Lustria to the land of the land of the Dark Elves? Across to Ulthuan or the islands about Nippon and Cathay? Perhaps not Stegadons but are Slann Mage Priests (their Palanquin Bearers/Guards carryswim with the object of their master posterior restfullness) ... Saurus Warriors and Skinks able to swim such distances?

I’d say that such distances would be much too far for Saurus and Skinks to swim - Skinks are scrawnier and more fragile than humans while Saurus are more resilient but slower. Naggaroth is connected to Lustria via a land bridge I believe, so Lizardmen armies could march up there, while I have always envisioned that they had massive stone ships powered by unusual means that contained their own temple city complexes to transport their troops further afield. It may instead be that the Lizardmen harness huge sea reptiles like plesiosaurs to transport their troops on their backs, or the Slann may even simply teleport them about, I’m not exactly sure. This is question for the great @Scalenex to answer!

P.S. As a Dwarf player, I love your member name! :oldman:

In fifth edition army book fluff, Mazdamundi would literally part the sea to let Lizardmen armies march overseas on dry land.

Later teleportation was implied in official fluff and teleportation became utilized in a lot of unofficial fluff.

Teleportation is probably very difficult and not very exact. If the Lizardmen could teleport accurately and easily they could be ruling the world. It is simply the simplest way to get Lizardmen to far away places with little exposition.

I think the idea of riding Pleisosaurs or giant turtles is pretty awesome. We also have fluff pieces where Lizardmen use fairly conventional ships. In some stories, the Lizardmen are expert sailors, in some they are novice sailors.

The fifth edition book mentioned certain Skinks being more used to swimming in salt water than others, but even they couldn't swim hundreds of miles. There is also some precedent of them going after ships near the coast with Terradon riders.

Some fluff has Lizardmen able to use mystic nodes and ley lines to travel over land very fast. That could work over sea.

If your story or miniatures game needs you to get Lizardmen overseas, there are plenty of ways to justify it.

I cannot find the original thread, but some people have discussed floating pyramids used as magic blocky boats. Not my preference, but if you like that idea for your fluff, more power to you.

Thankyou for this information, i will put each possibility into my project but leave aside the thought that swimming across the seas would be possible. I will put up a post to share my project hereabouts soon.

It is good to emeet you all, Agragax of Lunaxoatl i play Dwarfs from east of Karag Orud in original world setting in Warhammer Fantasy (Karaz Azgalgandaz) and Eldar in Warhammer 40,000 (Alaitoc themed). Scalenex, thank you kindly for the information ... there is so very much information about the Warhammer Fantasy world that i seek - i shall return hereabouts soon.

    Live long and prosper.

Love the answer of @Scalenex . The lore says no, but the lore is dead, long live the lore!

I wrote a bit on the "seafaring lizardmen" into the lore of my temple city.

Specifically about stone ships, which were apparently a thing in ancient China:

And came back in Total War Warhammer 2!

That’s a very long name for a Dwarf fortress! Great to hear you play Alaitoc as well - they’re my favourite Eldar craft world too.

    Peace and long life! :vulcan:

Sea-faring amongst Lizardmen is an interesting prospect, whether it be from a perspective of using some of those beautiful stone ships as shown above, or the more basic idea of strapping howdahs to sea-going animals, such as this old chestnut of a custom model.

Total War Warhammer 2 also cites the existence of Pliodons, "large, river-going creatures that seldom move on to land. They are used by the Lizardmen to ferry cohorts across bodies of water."

Interestingly enough, Pliosaurs were a type of marine reptile present during the time of the dinosaurs on our world, the most famous of which being the Liopleurodon (massively upscaled by Walking with Dinosaurs, but quite a beautiful prospect for a model)

What it comes down to is, I think a matter of interpretation and common sense. Large aquatic reptiles tend to swim below the surface, which while it would offer the Lizardmen a uniquely stealthy and deadly living submersible fleet, for Saurus not blessed by Tzunki, would be quite an issue, unless the guide for this mount was ensuring it remained surfaced. As a result, it seems likely that such beasts would be used for short range crossings, or if used with aquatic troops, might be used as transports similar to how Navy SEALs and other special forces use submersibles to deploy troops undetected, with a bonus of a large sea-faring monster providing support.

    Long story short:

    • Short Range Crossing: Aquatic or Amphibious Animals (preferably reptiles)
    • Medium Range Crossing: Stone Boats or Temple Ships
    • Long Range Crossing: Site to site teleport across the Geomantic web (But only if there is a viable link on both ends)
    • Exodus into space: Bigger Stone Boats. Kind of.
So, to establish teleportation, the First need to be in control of both locations, and to travel further afield.

The General Compendium talks about a possible White Dwarf update on Monster Class ships, however I don't know if that ever happened.
If anyone owns the WD that mentions it, I'd be very glad to see those pages.
The only thing I have been able to find is that old excerpt from the GW website but that has lost the original images.
