In all the time I’ve been a Lustria Online forumite, I’ve come to expect some things to be certain. One of these is that whenever the teaser trailer for the next Star Wars film comes out, our dear friend @NIGHTBRINGER puts it up on the first post of a thread dedicated to thoughts and ruminations about the upcoming film. For some reason he hasn’t done it this time around (perhaps it was something else to do with Episode VIII :p), so I’ve taken the liberty of doing it for him:

And now that we’ve all seen it, it’s time to discuss what we think it’s going to be like - I look forward to seeing your views! :)

I know it was (in the Star Trek vs Star Wars Thread) but I thought it should deserve its own thread as the other films had their own threads :D

The saga came to an end last movie if not before. I think the new Star Wars movies are best coined as expensive Star Wars fanfic.

    I respectfully disagree.
Despite their flaws the movies captured the Star Wars feeling for me, I for one am excited to see more.

Same here. I do hope though that J.J. Abrams doesn’t try to get rid of what happened in the Last Jedi - I think lots of the potentially changeable stuff deserves to stay in, and preferred the Last Jedi overall to the Force Awakens.

I think to really judge the movies we have to see them as a whole.
Same with the OT and the prequels of course.
So yeah, curious what they gave come up with.

They better not bring Sidious back (aside from marketing or flashbacks, etc.).

Unfortunately it seems that he will - Kylo is certainly seen rebuilding his helmet (which sucks as I really wanted him to move away from being a Vader wannabe and become his own character) and Rey is either wielding Anakin’s Lightsaber again after repairing it (which again would suck) or her own Lightsaber based on Anakin’s design in the way that most Padawans in Episodes I-III designed their Lightsabers after their master’s weapon out of respect (and Luke does this as well with his green one being similar to Obi-Wan’s).

I also don’t know what that business with the wrecked Death Star is all about - I pray to the Gods that they’re not going to Endor, because I think one film with Ewoks was enough.

Why not? I think the return of Palpatine as some sort of malevolent Sith spirit would make the film far more enjoyable, and it might lead to him revealing the part of Snoke in all of this.

I don’t mind Kylo Ren repairing his helmet or Rey rebuilding the lightsaber. Kylo’s destruction of it felt more like the biddin* of Snoke and him repairing it seems like him going back to his own way, while the destruction of the lightsaber felt less like some major event and more like just a symbol of Rey and Kylo’s equal power and desire for the Skywalker/Jedi legacy. What I’m concerned about is more them resurrecting Snoke or revealing that Rey is in fact a Skywalker. The fact that those two things were subverted in the last film worked really well for me, so I don’t want them both to be just tossed aside and ignored. I also agree with @NIGHTBRINGER that they should not bring back Palpatine. They pulled it off with Maul, but he didn’t really have much of a part without it and his death was ambiguous enough to get away with it. Palpatine is far too major to do that with - much like Snoke, it would just feel cheap and forced, too much like the DC/Marvel way of things. They have their place, but in my mind Star Wars is supposed to be separate from that.

Oh and btw, in the expanded universe the Emperor "survived" (he became some sort of force ghost and a few years after RotJ he managed to transfer into some hidden clone body of his IIRC) so yeah... everything is possible. I'd not like that though.

Because it undermines the primary story arc of the PT + OT (the fall and redemption of Anakin). The betrayal and destruction of Sidious was the redemptive act that closed Anakin's story. If they bring Palpatine back, it cheapens it a bit.

I think this is a weird, but important topic; absolutely no one has a "right" or "wrong" here. The original Star Wars movie, episode 4 is often compared to the Monomyth of Joseph Campbell, the "Hero's Journey". The episode 4 were a brilliant hole in one, a big success, and episode 5 and 6 probably surfed a bit on the fame of the first, equal to how Matrix film 2-3 did.
It's as if we compare someone trying to make a Hero's Journey, to a "George R. R. Martin" style way of making stories. Both is brilliant. What I'm puzzled over, is no direction behind the movies, especially since Marvel did this, and it seems to work. If you prefer Rian Johnson or J. J. Abrams is no problem, in itself.
Disney obviously started, based on the writer / directors interviews, on making movies with no idea behind story arcs, no idea where they go. Its a bit like series like Gene Roddenberrys Andromeda where loose episodes were bought pell mell off the marked, and storylines were added ad-hoc.

Imho: this is like a D&D storyline, where something crashes, and the DM just make up stuff, and got no idea what happens in the future. Problem is, we now know no one knew where the story ended, and made up the story, here it is, hope you have a fun evening, goodbye..
Rian Johnson contradicted, wrote off, annulled and countered almost every plot, hook, and ignored everything ever written on monomyth or the Hero's Journey. That is fine. The Last Jedi was a great experience in the cinema, though puzzled me, afterwards. The Jedi books is an example; I could fill pages with stuff making little sense in "Star Wars", and the "Disney canon" is jumping as Night Goblins on squigs all over the place; we now know the Jedi got Holocrons for first time in "real canon", and the movie introduce.... Books? Never knew they existed in Star Wars main culture!
I like the new trailer, btw. :D

Episode V is largely regarded by most (not all... yes I know your feelings @Lord Agragax of Lunaxoatl ) Star Wars fans as the best one. I think V and VI are vastly better than IV.

This is one of the two biggest issues I have with the Disney owned trilogy.
