    Here is our fictitious scenario:

You win contest at Games Workshop that entitles you to a free new army (say $2000 worth of models), however, just for fun the following stipulations apply...
    • you must choose a new army as opposed to adding to an existing one you already own (it's okay if you already have an odd model from this army, but it should be a new army for you)
    • you cannot sell or gift the army to anyone, this is for you alone
    • you can choose from any army from either WFB, AoS, 40k, LOTR or Hobbit.
    • all your model selections must be confined to models of that particular army/faction (no grand alliance business)
    • you are free to choose models from both GW and Forge World as long as they meet the criteria outlined above

So which army do you choose?

    I love this question!

Just have a couple of queries though:
    • Can you purchase hobby supplies, e.g. Green Stuff, alongside the models?
    • Are we assuming GW decided to continue making all the Fantasy models they executed when AoS first came round?

    Interesting.
I am tempted to say "imperial knights", as I've got only a couple of them, but 2000 $ are pathetically few money for that (a large chunck would vanish with FW stuff).

so let's pick something more traditional.
I'm not a fan of chaos ad destruction, as i don't own anything... so it would be nice to have a full fledged army, that i could eventually improve with relative ease. Or i could go where my heart already is (Order / Death / unusual Imperium / Xenos)
this leaves me with 3 options:

    Fantasy & 40k
NURGLE: it's the chaos more funny army (at least imo), and i can play it in both fantasy and 40k.

    Only fantasy:
SPIDER Goblins. Men, to swarm the table with lots of spiders of different size would be great.

    Only 40k:
DEATH KORPS OF KRIEG. i think this would probably be my choice.

I think I'd go LOTR and paint them up as display pieces.

    That's really a fun question!

    I'd most likely choose T'au.
I own a grand total of two models of that army, both unpainted, and their Codex. I always wanted to try out 40k and use that army, but the cost/time held me back.

2000 bucks.... might get a Manta from Forgeworld and spend the rest on some infantry or so.

You can purchase whatever you like outside of the models at your own expense, nothing else changes outside of those parameters laid out in the first post. Let's assume that you could choose fantasy models that were executed with AoS, however, their current rules status in AoS remains unchanged.

And what specific army from LOTR?

It would be Good I think, Evil is ok but some of the models look weird.

Assuming a recently purchased Start Collecting Militarum Tempestus set is a sufficiently small quantity of models to not “own” the army I would probably go with Astra Militarum, given that’s what I’m currently starting with in 40k. However, if that isn’t the case then I would probably pick Tzeentch, or possibly either Tau or Space Marines. Both the aesthetics of Tau and Space Marines appeal to me (although I’m not a fan of the latest Vanguard models of Marines and like SCE they are vastly overdone with releases), but two of my friends are already starting to collect those armies, so for that reason I’d probably pick Tzeentch. Plus, it gives me a chance to get a Lord of Change or two - I’d feel uncomfortable getting such an expensive model with my own money, but having this bonus would make me feel better and I get the sense you need them for a decent Tzeentch army.

If it was fantasy, probably orcs and goblins. Make some massive and characterful hordes of orcs, savage orcs, night goblins, squigs, and some trolls and rock lobbas for fun. Maybe a squiggoth. Afterwards buy a pathetically small but heroic band of dwarfs to defend the hold against the green tide.

40K? Probably admech. Robots for days. Convert them into bug robots and let samurai jack go to town on them.

I like the idea of the LOTR line, and a batch of the fellowship would be fun to do. Especially the part in Moria, or fighting the Uruk hai when Boromir dies.

Necrons or Skaven? That's a hard choice!

Skaven to have a second army to play whenever somebody visits me. Necrons to try 40k. I heard it has much better gameplay than AoS.

For me it is the Dawi-Zharr. The Chaos Dwarfs. The Legion of Azgorh.

I've always loved the army but being a Forge World exclusive army, it is prohibitively expensive. I've always liked Dwarfs and adding a little Chaos flavour only makes it that much better. I also like that they have access to monsters and magic... unlike their vanilla flavoured brethren.

AOS - Khadron Overlords. Just love those airships....

    Or,

40K - Adeptus Mechanicus. Big fan of the rather twisted steampunk vibes.

If I had to choose an exclusively AoS army, the Kharadron Overlords would be my first pick.

I might have been tempted to say "Tomb Kings" or "Blood Angels", but...

If I was to choose something I dont got (I got Space Wolves models), I'd pick Skaven. Always loved those crazy doomwheels and mad creations. And AoS is playable, Fantasy... Maybe not.

Doesn’t matter about their AoS rules as I’d keep on playing Fyreslayers, Skaven and Gloomspite, as long as the models themselves are available ;)

As Fantasy models are eligible, I’d go with Tomb Kings (Bretonnians would be my second choice, but considering I was almost driven mad just by painting freehand heraldry on the shields for 15 High Elf Spearmen, Tomb Kings would be healthier for my sanity).

$2000 (roughly £1500) will certainly be enough to buy not only some of the newer Tomb Kings sets (a couple of boxes of Tomb Guard, a couple of Warsphinx kits and some Necropolis Knights) but should also be enough for me to buy some boxes of the newer Vampire Counts Skeletons for my Core units and some of the old Tomb Kings Skeletons for shields, banners, bows e.t.c (the old Skeletons themselves can do for battlefield casualties adorning scenery pieces), along with a Casket of Souls, some Priests and a Tomb King. I’ve got the book for Tomb Kings as well, so no need to worry about finding that.

If Fantasy armies weren’t eligible for selection, I would most likely go with Genestealer Cults for 40K - having fought Imperial Guard lots of times in the past with my Tyranids, I thought it would be great fun to field some tanks and Guardsmen alongside them that serve the Great Devourer, rather than the Corpse-Emperor!

Technically, that would be in violation of the "all your model selections must be confined to models of that particular army/faction" parameter. Otherwise people could buy whatever they wanted for "conversion" purposes. For instance, I couldn't pick up a Chaos War Mammoth for a Chaos Dwarf army because I intend to convert/use it as a K'daii Destroyer (which doesn't even have a model).

Tomb Kings are a great choice. If I didn't already have a TK army, they would have been my first choice as well!

True, but you could say that what I’m intending to do could be acceptable because I’m using one faction’s Skeleton models to make another faction’s Skeletons (the same unit, just with different aesthetics), simply because GW failed to make the effort to give the latter faction some more proportionally accurate Skeleton models, whereas in your example you’re intending to convert a model into something that looks and works completely differently in the game (a massive mutated mammoth doesn’t exactly look much like a fiery spirit of destruction, even if they are equally good at killing things).

However, I am willing to submit to your judgement and change that order to more of the ancient Tomb Kings Skeletons with the bulbous skulls and oversized bodies if that is the absolute rule. I would have been getting some anyway in the context of this thread for the shields, banners and bows, I would just buy more of them and make them into my actual units instead of the Vampire Counts ones.

As an aside, did you ever buy and/or read a copy of Storm of Magic? Because in Storm of Magic games any army could take a Chaos War Mammoth if they had enough Monsters and Magic points...
