    Hey all,

Though I am new to fantasy, I have been playing 40k for a very long time. My painting skills unfortunately, are average at best. So I was thinking what you thought of this, and if you have any tips about how to paint it, what technique and which paint.

I was thinking of painting my skinks yellow. I always use a black spray. I was thinking of applying a yellow color normally, and then dry brushing two aditional layers of brighter yellow on top.
My skinks would then get black stripes, drybrushing two layers of black/dark grey on top of the yellow. I would not try to make these stripes identical, the idea is in fact not to.
The scales will be brown. I would take a base color brown, apply one layer, wash, and then camo green drybrush.

The scales from my saurus warriors will be the same. The skin will be in reverse, so black skin with yellow stripes. The shield will either be red or purple, matching the color of the scales on my big beasties.

In 40k, I used metallic paints a lot, but never a lot of chromatics. so any advice/tips are welcome :)

sounds like it will look awesome!

Will you be looking at cutting corners after skink no. 20? If so, can you cut down a step and still produce a scheme that is up to your standards?

Can't quite figure from your post - are you base spraying the skinks black? You might find a few extra coats of yellow might be needed.

I always base spray in white, but just my way I think! I find it much easier to create dark areas by washing, than drybrushing to hightlight.

Pop up a pic or two of your first attempt :D

Yeah I use a black spray. I find that most colors have a nicer effect on a black basecoat than a white (at least, in my experience with metallic colors).

I do not understand what you mean by cutting corners. are you saying this is too much work, and after 20 skinks I will not keep it up because it takes too much time for one skink?

I like drybrushing because it gives a nicer effect. the paint is not all evenly distributed. Makes the model look real instead of a panted miniature.

But I do not knot, which color spray, which and how many layers of yellow/black... do I use a wash? and if so, which one?

Yeah, maybe because in not the biggest fan of skinks, after i had done 10 to a good detailed standard, i found for the next 20 i found a way to paint them that was easier, quicker, and looked nearly as good. Note the 'nearly' - i was happy to trade some quality for speed, but that's just me. Just checking its a painting system you will be happy to repeat over and over :D

You make a valid point. I hadn't thought of that, but looking at my progress in 40k I can kinda guess it's gonna hapen to me as well. :shifty:

So how about this. I use a white spray coat, and apply the first layer of yellow (a base paint) with the airbrush. Then a shade (but which one?) and after that I can drybrush two aditional layers of yellow. This makes life a lot easier, so I can push out several skinks in an evening.

OK so my skills as a photographer are abysmal, but here it is. I don't think I will add the black stripes after all, cause I think it looks cool as it is. I still need to do the eyes and the weapons, and I have doubts about the red skin in the nek.

All comments and tips welcome :)

Still no good at photography, but I am very happy with the eye :)

    Hiya, there!

Sorry for the kind of late response, only now found this post.

I'm also painting my skinks yellow. You can check them from the link on my signature. I also have tried different washes and show how they compare. I think there's also some recipes in there as well.

It is often said that with black spray, colours look better, but I think with yellow you just have to do so many extra layers that it's not really worth it. And regarding the washes and highlights, you can do both on same models, it just gets better, as you have higher highs and lower lows, so to speak.

Your test skink looks nice, I'm a fan of the red/orange crest. If you are not afraid of the extra step, I think adding black stripes or spots would look good, as long as you stay in moderation. And you don't have to do it for all the skinks, some in the unit might have them while others might be just yellow. It creates nice variance!

    Good luck with your painting!

This short article might help with your photography woes.

Ps. I rather like the yellow, and the eye turned out great, bur I think the scales could unse another lighter green brybrush/highlight to make them pop a little.

    Heya,

so it's been a while since I was last here. and I thought I'd show you an update on my progress. I am not a very fast painter, so it's not that much I'm afraid. and again, sorry for the poor photo's, but these photo's where made with my mobile just for the fun of sharing them with friends. had I used a camera, they would have been better:)

So, my skink skirmishers are finished for now. I am considering still adding the black stripes, plus the crest is now mostly red instead of red/orange. But since I got an entire army to paint, this will do for now. Also the scales are now brown, I decided I disliked the green, but added a very thin layer of ushabti to make them look a little crispy.

I have also started with my saurus warriors and my slann mage priest.
For my saurus warriors I chose a green skin, red shield and golden armour. This is the first cohort, the second has hand weapons. I figuered that each cohort will be one spawning, so each cohort will have a diffirent shade of green. These have an ogryn camo highlight, the second cohort will have a moot green highlight. But the shield will be the same, as will the carapace/scales. In fact, the scales will be a common theme throughout my army.

That's a really effective bone colouration on the Slann skull.

    Thanks:)

It actually happened by mistake, as I didn't have "screeming skull". I was impatient, and mixed ushabti bone with white 1:1, which turned out way to light. I had to wash it with Agrax earthshade again. But the end result actually turned out quite good:)

Looking good on the Skinks! I like the color combination of the skin and scales. It will be nice to see some of the Saurus up close when they are finished. Lord Kroak looks like he is ready to start casting. Even by accident the bone does look good.

I agree with this. Kroak looks great. Could you share your process for this bone colour?

    Sure, I'd be honoured.

I started with a white spraycoat, the ancient skull white:). After that a layer of ceramite white to make sure everyting was, indeed, white, followed by Ushabti bone. I covered everything with a thin layer, taking no regard for the details. Then a wash of Nuln Oil. I added quite a lot to make sure all the little holes and cracks where visable again. however, make sure you do not add too much, as the current shades can become glossy. (I do not know if this is true for nuln oil, but it hapent to me with agrax, bieltan and athonian.)
At this point I wanted to finish, but as I said, didn't have Screeming skull. I drybrushed a 1:1 mix of Ushabti bone with White Scar, allthough Screeming skull probably work as well. haven't tested it though. Then, to finish, a thin layer of agrax earthshade.

    sure np.

My saurus warriors are almost finished, though, as I said, I am not a very fast painter. I hope to post picures soon.

In the mean time, I was looking for a way to convert salamanders and razordons. I have absolutely no love for either of the models and thus refuse to buy them. Has anyone seen any cool conversion lately? preferably reptillian;)

    EDIT:
First finished Saurus warriors, base excluded.

Great work on what you have done so far! Like the extra attention to detail you put into your pieces too! The bases are done well. Hope it doesn't take to long to do each one? The color shading on your Bastiladon, looks really good. Can't wait to see it all together finished? :)
