I don't believe there is any specific background. At least, not from what I recall - there are quite a few temple cities that GW left for us to imagine fluff for ourselves. I guess it's a prime opportunity to make some fluff up yourself
Hair-splittingly close to non-GW IP if I can trust what harked up when I googled it. Author Mary Hoffman? City of Masks City of the Masks sometimes refers to real world Venice. So, Not highly original... @Gemini do you have a page reference?
I believe it's marked on the map in the 8th Edition, but I don't remember it being mentioned anywhere else in the book or any previous editions.
I can vouch for that one, I've been there... definitely a city of masks! You're right, page 25. Hualotal (City of Masks)
Know Your Lustrian Geography ! Some of these place names are official 8th edition canon as seen on a certain map on page 25 and some of them are from a fictional setting that has nothing to do with Warhammer (unless author Mary Hoffman plays Warhammer or is dating someone at GW Inc., ...you never know...MH is in the UK.) There is also a movie title lurking in the list... City of Ash City of Destiny City of Dragons City of Dreams City of Echoes City of Fire City of Flowers City of Ghosts City of Gold City of Lenses City of Masks City of Mermaids City of Mists City of Music City of Scales City of Secrets City of Ships City of Stars City of Swords The Valley of Gwangi The Gwangee Valley Which name is what is left as an exercise for aspiring Skink Scribes... All this is presented not so much as a quiz, but as an answer to the initial inquiry (there is not a story; there is just a graphix guy sticking names on a map) and as an opportunity to contemplate and ruminate on the difficulties of originality.
you forgot city of the lenses and others plus i havent heard some of those names or seen them in the maps...... did you make them up.... it's ok
The list contains one Movie Title,.. The list contains some novel titles written by M. Hoffman,.. The rest come from a map in a LM army book [8th p. 25]. I did not invent any [above; but see below]. Is City of Lenses a Hoffman title I missed?
Oooh! Is the movie one "The City of Slickers"? I liked the old human (Jack Palance) in that one . He died Spektazuma - warning horrible pun content from Bob, sensible discussion from everyone else (Slanputin had not yet begun to cheese)
City of Lenses :: I found the reference @Gemini ::: here is a link for everybody else. (It goes to the first post in the same thread that Bob linked.) I will add it to the master list once I have spotted it for myself on the map. These I made up (for letters not yet used): City of Colossi City of Lava City of Palms City of Revelations City of Terrors City of Vines
Some other made up ones which might inspire the imagination: City of Mirrors City of Silence City of Mines City of Tombs If somebody is taken with any of the names listed here or earlier (in English), the Lustria-Online translation service could use this thread to work out an appropriate Saurian transliteration.
I object: my erudite discussions cannot be undermined by your discussions, edam it! As for further inspiration look to the other non-city places - it's where I drew a lot of inspiration from for my fluff [/plug] and may also help e.g: The Floating Pyramid Ziggarut of the Sun The Jade Pools The Temple of Kara The Silent Listeners etc.
