That actually looks like a pretty nce army overall. I would probably reduce or remove one of the skink units to increase the saurus to 18 models, and go 6x3 instead so they get an extra two models attacking. They aren't going to be receiving a lot of support in terms of flank chargers so will need to try to hold out on their own, and even though saurus are good 15 is a small number. I don't really know how you intend to play them though I guess.

Shame to see normal stegadons down the drain...

I understand that impact hits are a bit more of a problem for Priests when on Steggies, and that you can't have a banehead skink chief with a great bow, but... what about it makes them just completely worthless?

Yeah i have to ask the same, i found nothing new in the FAQ about the stegadons that i reflected over would make anything worse.

    @ Revered_Guardian: This FAQ: http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/

@ strewart: Thanks, I'll definitely give that some thought.

@ Jive Professor and teknistmajjan: I was really looking forward to being able to use the Chieftain's BS on the howdah weapons. BS 3 just isn't worth it. I think the War-Spear might still be a viable option, but for now, I'm not sold.

Yeah the poor BS when you will be moving or in combat every turn.. Plus it cannot S&S (not too bad really).

About the warspear, without trying to drag this too much off topic (you said you were considering it :p), its cool that it has magic attacks for all the impact hits, but where is that going to be useful? Ethereal units are usually 3 models strong at best, do you want you character on steg charging into that? It ignores some ward saves, but that is fairly limited.

very usefull. it happened to me many times before that some thereal unit stopped infront of me just to catch me and hold me for several turns. now the impacts are magical it will make my steggies way more better.
and who cares about the low BS? i only saw it as a bonus as long as i used the chief BS.
the only thing i dont liek is the stand and shoot. had many lucky shots with my giant bow on killer elite units :)

The list looks a little odd, nice fast killy lord but missing some support, COC would be nice + gives another option for your enemy to shoot.

It looks pretty good, but what, may i ask, are the terradons going to be used for? 3 unis of 3 just seems a little odd....

@strewart: Im guessing he uses 15 for the same reason i would, rank bonuses, and the fact that 6x3 may bot be that great when you're taking on something that is 5 accross and on a small base. It also just makes the unit wider. He may also be slightly anal like me and just prefer a roundish looking unit (to me, 6x3 just looks too wide and not log enough.... yeah... im strange.)

Ok but if you have 6 models across on 25mm base, the unit is 150mm wide right? A unit on 20mm bases 5 wide is 100mm. Which means you can still get all the 6 saurus in contact with enemies since corner to corner count, it will just fit perfectly. 4 saurus in full contact with 5 20mm models and one saurus on a corner out either end. So that shouldn't be a concern at all.

Me? I prefer an effective unit to a pretty looking one. You obviously don't take archers much do you? 10x1 or 10x2 is the norm for units of them. :p

But you don't always get the picture perfect contact (infac, rom what i've seen, normally you don't.)

As soon as lizards get archers, i'll use them. Its not that they look pretty, its just i prefer them that way... mostly for the reason i've just given. Also, with archers, you don't really need to worry about them getting into CC (that is, if they do their job right,) so 10x1 is fine seeing as you're trying to maximise shots not CC atacks.

But still.... i'll try a unit of 18 and see if i like the feel of it.

@KroxigorsFTW - when you charge and contact the enemy, you move the units in such a way as to bring the maximum number of models (of both sides) into the combat.

Personally, I prefer a frontage of 5 since it allows for better movement. 6 is a bit unwieldly to move about. However, I use the change formation option very often during the game. Seems that many players either do not know about this or simply forget it. In a recent game, my opponent started commenting on the fact that I only deployed the unit 5 models wide and that with his frontage of 7 cavalry he would easily hurt me bad. However, during the turn prior to receiving the charge, I changed formation and increased frontage to 9. 9 saurus in 2 ranks with spears is not something to laugh about. He did not charge.

I think that 18 models is a fair number for saurus but I would deploy in a frontage of 5 and change as necessary.

Aranigej is right, when you charge the units are 'shuffled' sideways to maximize contact between them. This move is free, and includes if you are charging at an opponent from an angle (most of the time there is at least a bit of an angle) once you have hit the unit, you are turned to face them for free and shuffled to maximie contact. The only time this wouldn't happen is if there is something in the way of part of the unit (like another combat) so there is only room for a bit of your unit to get in. So most of the time, you 6 wide saurus will get in contact with 5 wide 20mm models.

I agree that 6 wide 25mm bases is pretty large, its not too unweildy especially since you don't expect the slow saurus to be manouvring too much anyway. The main reason I suggested it was because asrodrig's list had smaller units, IMO a unit of 15 saurus (2 ranks) is going to struggle against many ranked units despite all the attacks from the spears, while a unit of 18 will have an extra 4 attacks which is impressive and really tips it in their favour against a lot of units. The list seems to lack significant flanking support so if the saurus are to deal with units on their own, you really need to make sure they will do the job.

    Agreed.

In my previous post, I was not contesting the amount of saurus in the unit but rather I was highlighting the point that you can, by means of a change formation, expand frontage according to your needs.

I never used the Chieftains BS, because that was a cheesey and ridiculous tactic to me, so I don't see anything that truly makes the Steggy so much worse than before. Even if you were using the Chief's BS, there are plenty of other good reasons to use the Steggy, not the least of them is an EoTG! But the War-spear is awesome. It'd be awesome without magical attacks. Try it sometime.

i have to say that the thought of steg's being worthless is a rather narrow view it is pretty much the same steg we had in the old book only with a higher US and are now a special choice if you used them before the new book i can't see much reason to not use them now they haven't really changed they are still a viable choice just not as horrible as we like to make them

Wow, i never thought about it like that. I'll try the 18 saurus then.... that sounds like a very... annoying thing to do... for the opponent. I must say, this (and stewert's) has definatly changed the way i think about ranks, though i do prefer 5, with reforming... wow.

Admittadly, i didn't know about this 'free move' as im currantly reading my way through the army book and everything i know now i got from my friend that i played a game with. (though, he's not the best person for remembering rules... or playing by them.)
