Looks like that guy spent a considerable amount of time standing in the Purple Rain. :)

Are all your Skinks going to be purple?

    Thanks Warden!

To answer your question Ag, the other skinks are going to be blue with orange scales. I'm posting the 5 I have done below to give you an idea. I figure the Starpriest has been playing out in the stars with his Slann buddies, drinking in all those UV rays, and should pop from the other skinks a little more :) I am thinking he's going to end up purple skinned with blue scales.

Welp, got totally sidetracked from painting skinks and my starpriest and started work on a Carno. Trying my hand at edge highlighting his scales. About 4 hours in I think, with the most time spent on highlighting scales and trying the get it's belly yellow. (The yellow paint needed 4ish coats to cover the macragge blue primer.)

PS Pardon my fiancee's Nurgle friends in the background.

    March's goal:
    • Complete unit of 10 skinks (5 already done)
    • Skink Starpriest
    • Finish Carnosaur
    • Base all painted models
Since I didn't make ANY progress on the goals for February due to being sidetracked, here is my first attempt at basing some of the models I already HAVE painted (pardon the washed out pic. It was late and rushed).

It's been a long while since my last update. I am trying to get myself back into the swing of painting, so I have been poking around for some inspiration and saw some cool Bastilodons. I figured I should upload my own WIP.

Mostly, I need to touch up the center jewel a bit, drybrush the skinks as they are waaaay to dark right now and only have their primed color, touch on the ruins he's standing on, and then base the bugger.

Looking good mate! Don't be afraid to add more contrast on your orange. It's definitely okay to do multiple thin washes in certain areas, like under the big spikes, to create darker shadows. I like the color contrast, but with a little more effort you could really increase the depth! I like the color scheme a lot, he will look good next to those skinkers!

I took your advice and dry brushed some yellow on the tips of the shell. I probably wanna darken an area or two a bit further, but it's bangin' now! I will post an updated pic soon, but need to do some reconstruction. My cats cast the noble beast from my paint station and some spears have been snapped off.

However, in addition to that I have started finally on the skinks I've been avoiding since february. I still need to finish up detailing their shields, the edges of their bases, basing, and some spot highlighting, but they seem to be about 70% there!

They look good, looking forward to see them with finished bases!
    Will it be jungle bases?

No. As of now, I am doing a grassy/rocky terrain that has more of a plains type feel. The warriors in a previous post have their bases done in this fashion if you want to see what I mean. I figured, for now, I wanted to do a fairly neutral base that wouldn't look too out of place on any tabletop. As my army grows, that may change, but for now my current goals are mostly to focus on the paint job and improve my skills there.

I noticed strong improvements from the just drybrushed skinks to the lates photo of them! I think, with the exception of scales, Skinks don't offer enough structure for nice drybrushing results. The neutral bases of course make sence if you play on many different tables.

Maybe just apply some small edge highlights (face, hands...), like only one or two layers? Maybe it's even totally fine as it is when viewed with a nice base.

I agree that some edge highlights could go a looooong way. Thanks for the suggestion! It's be a nice way to give "tabletop quality" a little boost, and wouldn't be too time consuming as I am trying to learn not to fret over every little painting mishap. I am prone to taking hours on a single model lol.

Also, with this second set, I was more careful about how much paint was on the brush, and dry brushed with a color that was closer to the color I primed with. I like the results a lot more, as it looks much more natural. Maybe the highlights I do will be closer to that first color I tried dry brushing with...

Awesome color schemes, all your models really pop out, I'm sure they will all look stunning together on the table top :D
