So, I picked up a start collecting box, a slaan, a skink starpriest, and a box of skinks. After reading a whole bunch of tactics posts on this site, I came to the conclusion that, considering I'm not going to be seeing any competitive play, (I play at home) so, basically all our units are decent enough, and so I'm just making what I'm into. That said, I did some converting from the SC box, and I now have the following units. Troglodon, (the model is just better than the carnosaur. Imo) 5 knights w/ lance 10 warrior w/ spear 1 astrolith Bearer (parts conversion) Oldblood w/ spear on foot Scar vet on cold one (parts conversion) Sunblood (parts conversion) Slaan Skink starpriest 2x10 skinks w/ blowpipe + club... The "list" isn't terribly important, but the colors are. I just moved, and when unpacking my paints, I found I had bassicly every color but yellow. (I mean I had 2 or 3... But compared with my 17 different blues...) and so my shelf of armies is really light on yellow. So, at this point my goal is to paint all this stuff, starting tomorrow with the new contrast paints. We have troop boxes with lots of models in them for little money, and a silly rediculous value on the SC box... And with contrast paints, I'm just not afraid of making/painting hordes anymore. So, I'm going to paint everything listed above while playing friendly games at 1000 -1250pts, untill I don't own a single grey lizard. I've thought about a few things, but I don't know how the colors play together. I'm hoping the folks here will have some ideas. As I get stuff painted I'll post it here, if folks are interested in my progress. I've been thinking a few things. Yellow skin, orangey-brown back scales, with forest green organic looking dinos. Emerald-leaf-dangerous snake green bellies, yellow back scales, orangey-brown looking dinos. Also, I kinda like how the codex makes each Dino feel like it has its own colors... But, as the slaan just remembers them all, I have this hilarious idea of a colorblind slaan that remembers them as another color. Like... Is the blue you see the same as the blue I see? Not for this slaan. He *thinks* he's nailed it. Yet... He's really just colored them in totally differently.
So, I have a bunch of photos I found on Google for inspiration.... Any opinions on how to blend these guys into a scheme?
For the first three, I would suggest warp lightning and Iyanden Yellow. For #4 the brown scales can be gore-grunta fur or cygor brown, and for the blue-black scales you can either use leviadon blue or black templar with a highlight or drybrush of a dark blue like kantor blue. For #5 you can use a lighter color like apothecary white or one of the grey colors and transition to one of one of the brown colors or snakebite leather. For the orange parts use gryph-hound orange, and for the red parts use blood angels or flesh tearers red. I Love the idea of using real lizards as inspiration! Very creative! I hope to see pictures soon!
Dude, much appreciated. That's helps narrow down the list of what to buy, a lot. I'm chilling this morning before contrast paints hit stores, wondering weather or not I'll have to battle a line to get a wraithbone spray can and some Iyanden yellow.... So I'll photo the army in grey as it stands now. Any totally stock models don't get close ups... But I convert a lot, so even minor things make a big difference in making it feel your own. So I did close uos for those. Some razordon and skink hadlers, converted from spare fleshounds, and cold one heads. With a stock troglodon in the background. saurus knights, with my Scar Veteran on cold one... I used the tip of the carnosaur tail and a few saddle banners and extra feathers from weapons I didn't use... And bam... Scar veteran. I just hate when banner and drummer dudes don't have weapons. And look, I'll buy that banner dude is just a-whackin-away with that banner pole... Like it has a blade and everything. But what's drummer man doing at 2" range? I say, slinging his drum and sticks (micro clubs?) into his belt, and taking up the spear and shield he could totally also carry to stab fools in the neck. Also, why is squad leader dude getting two attacks? Why not two spears, so I remember.
astrolith Bearer of the spare parts bin. sunblood... Which, I played with him using Ghyreshryke (sp?) artifact.... Wtf ever? 5 attacks hitting on 3's exploding to d3 wound rolls on a 6.... With +1 to hit for 2's and 5's exploding.... Then 3's to wound exploding to d3 damage on 6's to wound, with +1 to wound, for 2's and 5's exploding? All at rend -1? Silly silly bullshit man. Won me my last game. Can't kill my saurus warriors if your whole squad is dead! *insert your favorite evil villain laugh* i just wanted the skink alphas to have flavor, so I clipped off the left handed javelin, and put the alpha club on it. This way you can see thier bolt spitter.
Contrast paints in hand, chilling with my wife out and about town while thinking about lizards. Does that make me cold blooded?
Looks great! I love the Razordons. If any of the colors are too dark, remember that you can always thin it with contrast medium. buh-doom tshh I don’t blame you. If I had a dollar for every second of the day I wasn’t thinking about dinosaurs... I wouldn’t have any money
Soooo... Here's the first dude. All contrast but the metal, which is auric armor gold, washed in Agrax earthshade. All the contrasts gotten at Dracorex's suggestion. I'm totally stunned with the results. I'm about to start on the trogladon now...
So I love the trogladon model, and this was done over the course of the day. Holy cow. Just lost a game with it against Daughters of Kaine... But hey, what are you gonna do?
So, I tried a thing. I took a pink metallic called 'bubblegum crisis' and a 'bright platinum' and did a thin base coat on my slaan. (platinum underbelly). Then I used the Iyanden yellow contrast paint over top... Later I highlighted the belly with 'demonic yellow' (several non citadel paints in use) I'm working on the throne now. So much gold.... I'll post pictures of the throne soon.
Awesome work, nice pace the colors look great keep the pictures coming I love your Sunblood conversion, really looking like the real deal(GW-model) Gr, Imrahil
Next off the line, we have the sunblood. I gave his shield an extra highlight of 'hot orange' to make it pop. Every model makes me more impressed with Warp Lightning. That color is bonkers. Those vines, on the slaan above? Warp lightning over Grey seer 2 thin coats, aggrax earthshade 2 coats. That color keeps its "contrast" into deep layers, so you can get a very deep green.
Got another hero done! Man... All hail the contrast paints!!!1! I'm getting a little worried about basing however. Once I get all these guys painted, I'm going to have to base them. I know folks who are good at it do the basing and painting separately... But I'm lazy. So.... I would usually just paint the edge black and paint Elmer's glue over the base, sprinkle some gritty flock in a "not pattern" then dip the rest in a second color... But I'm hoping to come up with something more jungle-ish. If anyone has any ideas, that'd be awesome. But, any who here's a scar veteran on a cold one.
