Hey everybody, I am just getting into Age of Sigmar. I am really wanting to play Seraphon and I want to have an army that is at least somewhat competitive. I've looked at the competitive army lists on the forum but also know that a new General's Handbook just came out and that there are rumors of a new unit and/or Battletome. Because of that, I didn't want to buy a bunch of troops that are suddenly not good. Any tips for what to buy that is safe or should I just wait? Thanks for any help!

    Welcome to Lustria.

I would say it is safe to buy Slann, Skinks, Skink Starpriest, and Terradons/Ripperdactyls. These units should always be useful unless they under go massive changes.

Like above, but with the Ripperdactyls take a look at Bastiladons and Stegadons (Engines included)

Decide which of those groups you want better, hulking mass of dino on the defensive side or quick fliers that deal a tonne of damage. Also which one you like the looks of more. If you dealve into Seraphon more, youd need all of the above regardless for summoning. But starting out pick one of those two, then everything else the good sir above me listed.

Thanks for the quick response! Would buying something like the Seraphon Battleforce box be worth it? Or should I just go for individual pieces?

Thanks for the details! Wasn't sure how notifications worked but was wondering the same I mentioned above. Would buying something like the Seraphon Battleforce box be worth it? Or should I just go for individual pieces?

+1 battleforce is great for a new player, comes with a Shadowstrike ready to go, and a carnosaur/troglodon and bastilodon... all fun and useful models. buy the battleforce and a Slann and you have a decent starting army for casual play that can easily be expanded upon to make it competitive

The start collecting is also worth it IMO, if you build toward a Dracothion's Tail list.
Especially if you use @Crowsfoot 's amazing guide to get the most out of it.

Cost wise, the start collecting box is nice. I'm in the minority about how good the knights are, but you're basically buying a carnosaur/trog, and getting some battleline models for free. It also comes with plenty of awesome bits to put together heros with. I would 100% advise using those bits to put convert up your own astrolith bearer. The reroll all hits when near him is huge,

So... We pretty much need a slaan in every battle, so I would say to buy one of those first? But we may be getting a new book soon, so maybe they'll update their 15y/o sculpt finally?

Salamanders/razordons are fantastic, and do a lot of my heavy work, problem is, they're out of print, and expensive. If you can find them second hand, jump on it.

Salamanders/Razordons are back on the menu, at least in Europe. They were only unavailable for a short time.

Actually, with the points change, knights are marginally better than skinks (this is not taking in consideration the possible pre-requisites to field certain battalions)

I think Wary Fighter still makes Skinks better for holding objectives. Knights pretty much do what they always have done. They charge into corners of hordes and gum up the enemy movement phase.

This is true, but a force made up of knights is still solid. And a good target for our new single wound heal. They're not the best choice. But now that they're only 10 points more than skins, the added damage output makes up for it.

Skinks are (probably) better at holding objectives, but that doesn't mean knights can't. But knights do damage that skinks can't do. So, it seems like some of each is the best plan. Especially considering the command point abilities that affect saurus units and not skinks.

Skinks are great objective grabbers, but imo not great holders.
Wary fighters works if they are not the primary target AND they have numerical superiority to mantain the objective's control.
But if they are grabbing points, they will be a primary target.
Knights are good grabbers too, tnx to their 14" march move, and they can still fight to effectively hold it, where 10 skinks cannot stand against 10 skeletons.

I'm not saying that, all of a sudden, skinks are garbage.
But skinks at 60 and knights at 90, there was no match. 70 vs 80 tips the scales toward knights
