Hi all, I'm trying to introduce a new format into the paint and convert forum. Usually we get to see someone's development of their entire force, but how about we instead discuss one particular model and gain ideas and techniques from many painters in one place. Discussion topics could include: strengths and shortcomings of the model potential 3rd party models to use as proxies (like this guy http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/77006 proxying for salamander or razordon. nice and swampy! (As discussed in Theophaniel's post, http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/hey-new-here-and-i-wanted-to-share-my-sand-lizzies.10550/)) conversion options and why you would choose them (like troglodon head on new carnosaur) images of your work or inspiration I have found it helpful in the past to post something, and then return and edit the post as things progress (example: http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/spawning-of-bob-and-friends.10886/. This will allow us to see your progress work all in one place. Just add a brief post or comment to the end of the string so we know to go looking for updates. Back to the topic: BASTILADON Other esteemed lizardmen have commented eloquently on aspects of the Bastilodon model, I agree with Dan that the execution needs to be good for it to work out well. However, the alternative might appeal to Caprasauridae.... Didymus and Phatmofo provided more inspiration to set the tone for this model. The interesting possibility of the Sun shining from Sotec's arse to provide a multipurpose conversion should inspire all our great sculptors. My 2 plaques worth: The GW models have so much sweet freehand work, I really don't know where to start, considering my feeble abilities. (This is true of the Ripper and Terradon wings also) Hoping someone in Lustria can share something simpler that looks good. I really like the look of the Sotec's arse device, but hate the spaghetti. If I use it, I will make mine sans snakes. This will allow me to add any other frippery I want later (I want to do a Pofadder conversion http://imageshack.us/a/img21/4669/ulwh.jpg The Solar Engine looks to be made of fail. I haven't yet managed to make something glow convincingly. I'll avoid for now. I'm not a pokemon fan. Will someone post a picture of the pokemon equivalent, please? My initial thoughts are Sotek's arse with no spaghetti. Once I see the skinks I'll consider doing a cask of the cold ones variant using solar engine parts. (from http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/spawning-of-bob-lizi-lizi-lizi-oi-oi-oi.12185/. I tend to magnetise and swap my options anyway. No images yet. I haven't finished my Steg from 2 years ago yet - I was waiting for the Howdah Crew Rule to come in before I glued my skinks in place. So please reply with your ideas, or start a new thread for other troop types. This should be ripe for something like Scalenex's excellent Tactica index. He loves indexes. If there was a troop type "skink accountant" that would be him.... SoB
Having built 2 basiladons i have noticed in order to use both variants no magnets etc are required firstly build the basialadon until the two rails on his back are fixed the two javelin wielding skinks on the sides can be stuck on too (i wont do this until after painting) then build both the ark and the solar engine fortunately they both sit on the rails the only issue is the skinks at the back (i would advise using the numbered instructions to fix them (i did not with the 1st one multiple bits for skink arms :S) the ark s skinks can be fully formed and then stuck to the ark (again after painting) and the solar engine only requires a javelin or another hand weapon from your bitz box for his left hand and then he can be stuck on too (again after painting) this means one simply has to chose the piece they want and set it on the rails. the arc attachment to the rails holds it in place on its own i modified the solar engine ever so slightly it has 4 U shaped slots on the bottom that would normally just sit on the rails all i did was simply extend these out by a few millimeters with green stuff and it holds it fine. i now have 2 interchangeable dinos and some magnets i didn't need
Is it really as smooth, featureless and toylike in the plastic as it looks in GWs pictures? The only reason I'm going to take one is so I can do a Pokemon conversion Not sure if I'll go with Venasaur or Torterra, but both are big reptile creatures similar to an anklyosaur, and both have plants on their back and can use "solar" related pokemon abilities
I've been entertaining the idea of a swap-able engine/arse on the Basti', but my current designs for a Solar Engine is just too god-damn big! In m mind the engine needs to have more of a presence, which basically means bigger in size and more components....Somehow I'm unsure if it'll be swap-able or not! That being said, it's no big loss: I've been playing a lot of Siege battles recently and was thinking of using the snakes as defensive equipment, probably over the gatehouse: Sotek's Arse indeed
the actual plates are smooth yes but its back is made up of 6 actual plates to do a conversion i think you would require some work and slanputin the solar engine is tiny the actual gem is the size of my thumb nail
That looks pretty Schmick. I particularly like the lustrian steel daisies in the background. But how did you do your nice do?
I like the kit, easy to put together. But I don't fancy the head that much so I swapped it for a stegadon head. What do you think?
Well it required a lot of hacking and filing to get it to fit. I had to trim down some of the horns of the steg head. I cut up the headplate of the bastidon and refitted around the steg head and sculpted a new set of armour plates. I also sculpted some scale in the area between the head and the body. As seen here: Not a terribly hard conversion to make in my opinion.
i really like that head swap and nice blending in its just an idea but based on the fact the entire model underneath has those scales could a few more not be added to the bottom of the stegs head?
I really like the steg head! One of these day's I'll have to get better at green stuff.... <.< Maybe I need more than an EXACTO Knife to work the stuff....
Finished the Bastiladon, more pics in my blog: http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/children-of-qukaihuan-update-carnosaur-painted.7894/.
