Citadel dry paints expired? / Number of shields in a box of skinks?

Hey all, I had two kind of random questions.

    1) So I got a boatload of citadel paints second hand from a closing down hobby store, but lots of them had been sitting around for years unopened. It seems like most are still good but occasionally one will be dried to a semi-solid cake of pigment. The worst offender seems to be the dry paints, which makes sense. How do you know when a paint has "gone bad" and should be thrown out? Is there such a situation?

I tried with a couple to mix in water and stir it best I can. This works with most of the other types of paint (base / layer etc) but it ends up being a bunch of big chunks in water for the dry paint. It doesn't really want to mix. Also it seems weird to put water into a dry paint. If it turns out they just should be pitched its no big deal as I didn't pay much for them.

    2) I'm getting together all the bits for my skinks and it seems I'm short on shields by about a half dozen. I'm certain there was once enough shields in the box to suit my needs but they've gone missing. If I bought another box of skinks would there be a half dozen extra or is there just the minimum 24?

    Thanks in advance.

If you have clear acryllic liquid (for example airbrush thinner or Lahmian Medium) you can try that.
If the color is too dried out already it might not work, but it will often work if you give it some time.

I saved some decade-old acryllic colors that way.

I do have some lahmian medium, but i wonder if its worth using good paint to fix bad paints? I'll think on it, thank you. :)

    Lahmian Medium is ridiculously overprized.

Vallejo sells 200ml for 10 bucks. They call it "airbrush thinner". Same thing.

In fact there is some floor polish in the UK (forgot the name, sorry) that is also the same thing, for a fraction of the price.

You can get a _litre_ of the same stuff for the same prize as GW makes you pay for 12ml.

I looked it up, one of the "Pledge" floor finish products is also reported as working very good.

Some of those products are also usable as varnish btw. glossy or matte.

Pretty sure it is just one shield per body in an unopened box.

Oh damn I actually overlooked that second question!
(for a moment I was thinking "what the hell is @pendrake talking about??" :D

Yes, there are just enough shields in the box for every Skink. Not enough boltspitters though.

seems from some quick googling the Canadian equivalent (windex) should work as long as I get a clear version. That is incredible to know and my wallet is rejoicing.

I figured this was the case, thanks for the confirmation.

If the paint has not dried completely up, you can use a mix of water and medium to get them usable again. If they have dried all up, just throw them.
Tried to "revive" my old paints a few years back, and those that had dried all up I could not manage to get usable even after leaving them soaking for weeks before using a mixer in the pot. Basically just became water/medium with lots of tiny paint chunks.

If you have not considered, it I would recommend moving the paints you have that are working into dropper bottles, those seals a lot better and the paint will last longer. I got mine from eBay, think a hundred bottles for 20 dollars or so with shipping.

@Aginor: what's the name of the floor finish/thinner here in Germany? I remember reading about that but forgot it. Was it Future/Johnson's klear in UK?

I don't know any in Germany right now but floor polish or som window cleaning liquid are good bets. I'll see if I can find something.
You can probably get some via amazon from the UK or so but they are probably not worth it then because of shipping and so on.

Hoard o bits normally is a good place to get more shields (if they are in stock), and there a few other bits places out there if you look hard enough.

The only issue from dropper bottles I have ever had has been with Vallejo washes. On the end of the bottles life the remmnants congeal and come out the bottle in a mushy tube of semi solid wash
