Not sure what to tell you... that is just an old slow PC.
Not much sense in upgrading any part of it because regardless of what you put into it there will be something else slowing everything down.
Even a 400 bucks budget PC from today is significantly faster than yours and probably even faster than the recommended specs.

That recommended PC is ~3 years old as well, that one is pretty much the one I run right now and plan to replace next year.

I realize the only thing relatively new is my graphics card.

True but it will be working over time due to the processor not being fast enough, always go for the fastest processor as you can add ram and graphics card later.

Make sure the case is big enough to allow for upgrades, some mini cases are that tight a fit you struggle to fit cards in, I had to cut down a cooling fin on my graphics card to make it fit and that PC is also now too slow so were both in the same boat.

Ok. So if I wanted to do a full case rework upgrade... Using the only salvageable part I have out of my current rig aka the graphics card... What would be my best picks for parts on a budgetary basis? Let's look at a budget of $500 to start with.

For $500 just get a off the shelf rig, I'm no expert but there is no point in building a rig around a card that isn't latest tech.

You will get a decent rig for your budget just insure it can be upgraded, extra memory slots etc

    You can always overclock it

Ah I just realized I am an idiot that didn't read your post properly.

The 970 is absolutely OK. I think you can keep it.
If you can get compatible RAM another 8GB would be good and should achieve a noticeable improvement.

So is just getting the ram ok, or do I have to start from scratch + the 970?

Start with the ram but the processors are only 2.8ghz that is the problem

Would I require a new main board for that? Also, would I need a new power supply?

Depends you should be able to swap out processors but you may find it chesper to just buy a new rig, look for refurbished units that you can slot your card and more ram in, thats what I do

You probably don't need a new board if you can find a faster processor of the same series, let me check...

That's a AM3 socket. The newer ones use AM3+ so the only other processors that fit are of similar vintage I fear.

Ok the fastest one really compatible with your board is the "Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition" I think.
Not too shabby but still a processor from 2011. You can get it for about 100-150 bucks, probably used.

So yeah... I'd agree it probably isn't worth it.

Ah well. Now to figure out a budget spec for spotting my house into then. Thank you guys for your continuing help and support.

Honestly even though yesterday had it's ups, my mood for the entire day was one of "well....Bugger."

Yeah I know that feeling when you realize you just bought that shiny new game for sixty bucks that you had been waiting for since months and then it doesn't run on your PC. Sucks.
I am not a console fan by any means but that's one thing that doesn't happen on a PlayStation for example, and I like that.

I love games, PC, Console any really but there is a advantages to having both, I have 2 xbox ones
and a PC and I prefer playing games on the PC as it is what I have always done, Consoles are great as you never have to check the spec.
