It all started with the Black Reach box 6 years ago. My son and I wanted to get into Warhammer and felt that was a good starting point. We poured over building and painting then got to the playing part and were really confused and our interest dwindled. Then this year we got into Kill Team. He had been building a Necron army slowly over the years but never really did anything with them. I chose Tau and got to work on those robot boys. I’ve got them all painted up and have actually been playing some campaigns and games at shops. Our main place started doing an AoS escalation league and while I’m a little late getting to it (couldn’t afford a SC box when they started) I’m good to go. I battled between Nurgles or Seraphon and in the end my son chose Chaos (he wanted Seraphon originally) and that opened the door for me to get freaky with some lizards. Now that we got all the introductory stuff out of the way. I wanted to start journaling my progress on the army so I can see where I started and where I’ve ended up. I hope you guys enjoy and I’m always open to critique. I haven’t been painting for long and any feedback only makes me better!
Welcome back to the Hobby and welcome to lustria. Looking forward to you included us in your hobby journey.
Assembly and conversions. Some of these shots are post priming since I didn’t take any pictures before hand. The car I was by far my favorite thing. I was grinning ear to ear while I assembled him. Just every little piece going into place. The Skink eternity warden conversion I came up with I had posted this in another thread but I really love his look and character Scar Vet on cold one I’ve still got an astrolith bearer to create. I’m thinking of going the skunk route with him as well. I forgot to post it but I created a sunblood out of a warrior using the third special head in the SC BOX
Color schemes. I went through a couple using extra legs and arms but I’ve settled on my original theme of Randall from monsters inc. gonna be a purple/blue army and have fun with the Dinosaurs.
Priming and basing! I have spent so much time researching base options. From jungle to swamp to mountains. I really couldn’t decide. I think I settled in a nice place though. These are my first “real” bases. My Tau guys have the kitty litter (clean) treatment. Same thing with priming. Typically I prime with a brush but with the size of what I was dealing with I decided to go the spray paint route. Always afraid I’m gonna over spray and ruin my models.
All of my priming and base work was today’s project. I managed to finish all of the bases and couldn’t be happier. I put my Carno on his base because I couldn’t wait to see what he was going to look like a top it. Now that I’m all caught up, I’ll make sure I’m keeping this updated!
Nice work! good basing, easy way to do them separately I really like the skink priest conversion... the Cold ones head gives him more umpf. Love his weapon as well Good luck & fun painting Gr, Imrahil
Thanks. I was freaking out a little because we went to our hobby store and I didn’t buy flock. I ended up just painting the sand material I used on them to get a grassy/swamp feature. I actually have moss flock but I just don’t know if I’ll use it. I’m pretty proud of my work on them and don’t want to clutter the bases anymore.
You can get grass tufts that you can just dot on the bases here and there, that's what I do looks really effective. Your onto a cracking start with those bases, just take your time painting the Carny it can be a daunting model. Well done so far
Scales o’ glorious tedious scales I may have forgotten to take a few process pictures but I got around to getting the skin color onto all my current warriors. I’m using electric blue from Army painter and will highlight with either voidshield blue or a 1:1 mix of electric and white. Yesterday I dry brushed all the scales with Alien purple (we just have the giant army painter box so I may be limited in colors) also a second dry brush with grimoire purple near the central scales. I then began the process of using warlock purple and crystal blue to create random patterns. For the Old Blood I definitely used more purple to give him a more threatening vibe. Next up putting them on their bases so I can stop touching them and move onto detail work. Enjoy!
That big Army Painter box is pretty cool, it was my start into the hobby as well. Just make sure you shake the colors pretty well! That's what many people do wrong and then become unhappy with Army Painter, which is a pity.
Moving right along. I totally spaced getting a bunch of pictures during the process. I loved painting the carnosaur and have another to paint as well so pretty hyped to do it again in a different theme. Still have some work to do around the attachment point thinking of building more rocks
