Blog My Lizardmen Plog -- A few Post-Buckeye Battles Pics

So I'm planning on taking my Lizards to the Buckeye Battles tournament in July, and although they are mostly painted, I still need to paint 2 units, 2 characters, and make a display board. I figure if I blog my progress, it will help keep me on track. First up, although they are not the most optimal choice, I want to bring a unit of Saurus Cavalry. I'm planning on bringing a unit of 8, including a heavily converted Scar Veteran Battle Standard Bearer.

Rather than using the current range, I am combining Dark Elf Cold Ones with old metal Saurus Cavalry Riders. This is my prototype Cold One. Pic is with my iPhone, so quality is so-so.

Since I was happy with my test model, I painted up 9 more. Although I am only planning on running a unit of 8 at Buckeye Battles, I did a couple extra for more flexibility in the future. Pics are from my phone again, so quality and color balance aren't perfect, but you get the idea. First a couple groups of 5:





Here's the one I will probably use as a mount for my Saurus Battle Standard Bearer.


This is the likely mount for my unit champion.



Riders should get done pretty quickly. They are already assembled, and they have a lot fewer and bigger scales than the cold ones. I already have the first 5 almost done.

Woah those Cold ones are Realy Nice.
The orange accents are a nice touch,
and the Basing is truely outstanding.

I was hoping to get in a lengthy paint session tonight, but it didn't happen. The plan was to get 5 riders done for my Saurus cavalry, and I only got the unit standard done. Snapped a couple quick pics before heading to bed.

As you can see, the old metal Saurus riders fit perfectly on the Dark Elf cold ones. You just need to snip off and file down the high front and back of the saddles, which is really easy on the plastic mounts.

Haven't quite finished my Saurus Cavalry, but I did take some pretty good pics of one of my Terradon units I painted a while back.

Here are some pics of Saurus Scar Veterans.

First, a model on foot I will be using at Buckeye Battles:



Next is my Limited-Edition Saurus BSB that I won't be using, but that looks pretty. I gave him a shield (slung over his back) and added a couple horns/tusks to the bottom of the dangly bits of the standard.







Finally a WiP shot of my mounted Scar Vet BSB. Body is the champion model from the old metal Saurus Cavalry models with an extra back plate green-stuffed on to make him look more armored. Right arm is a Temple Guard Champ arm with some bits added to the top of the halberd to make it look even bigger (great weapon). The head was removed and a Temple Guard head (crest removed) stuck on, with some green stuff work to blend the head in with the back of the crest that was still on the body (extended the dino-skull helm back). Left arm is from the Saurus Warrior sprue. The banner is made from some bits from the Stegadon and Temple Guard sprues. The top part is already painted because it was part of another BSB model that I scrapped. It's not glued on at the moment.

Awesomeness. Are you able to post larger images? A closer look at the terradons and cold ones would be sweet. Likewise the standard bearer.

I am not going to use a Slann at Buckeye Battles, and it has nothing to do with game-play. The real reason is because I love this model:









The Carnosaur itself is unmodified except for the custom-sculpted base. The rider is a modified Kroq-Gar. The head was sawn off and replaced with the head from the Temple Guard sprue. I cut the fingers off the left hand and used green stuff to resculpt it into an armored gauntlet that looks wrapped around the handle of a shield. The shield itself is from a bits pack ("Lizardmen Oldblood Shields") available through Games Workshop. The big sword is custom sculpted from a piece of plasticard for the blade and green stuff for the details. Finally, I took a couple of identical banner-top type bits, cut the skull off one, and put them together into a round shape to make the totem (and cut down the top of the spear that serves as the pole).

those are the nicest saurus cavalry ive ever seen also love the carnosaur model!! ill definately be following this blog look forward to seeing more

Wow. I would never play a game without that bad boy.

Those terradons are sweet. The spots on the wings are great, and the skink scales are brilliant. The skink skin and terradon skin kind of blend a little to the eye in the photo, though. Are they so closely colour matched in real life?

@Old Mossy -- The skin of the skinks and Terradons are similar, at least in this unit. I have another set of 3 with very different Terradons. The skinks, saurus and krox are consistent across the army with near-black skin and then blue scales on the back. All the dinos are different though.

Excelent paint and great conversion skills.

I still can't for the life of me do a decent gem effect.
(Despite consulting several tutorials)
