I don’t know if this has been FAQ’d, however I was reading the warscroll and Instinctive Defense doesn’t specify ENEMY charge phase.

Does this mean you can use something like a Skink Starseer to grant them 3D6 charge, a Skink Priest to give them Shoot AND run AND charge... and a Starpriest for Mortals....

Then run them up the table and shoot 2D6. Then comes charge phase and so long as you were outside of 3” if you make the charge and now are within 3” you can shoot D6 and -1 Rend and then melee with their tail? So that’s like 2D6 + 1D6 + 3 attacks all in one thing?

This is like kind of good right?

That’s how it works, yup! The issue is the amount of wounds you’re likely to do, compared to a salamander which costs the same.

The one edge case where this is helpful is if you have a pack of 3 in a meeting engagement. If you can manage 5 wounds in the charge phase (which nets you a VP) that’s kinda nice.

It is alright, but the problem is that they cost the same as Salamanders, and with 3D6 shots (assuming you charge and shoot) they still on average unbuffed only do half the damage Salamanders put out. Starpriest will up their damage abit, but for 1 Starpriest you can add another Salamander and some change.

In Coalesced you even have the added benefit of Salamanders having a jaw attack, so they get an extra in melee.

meh, razordons have 1 advantage over salamanders, they don't have the same giant target painted on them. You might get some use out of them like this as a supporting unit that doesn't draw attention to itself, but does do a decent chunk of damage, especially to squishy stuff.

Can you shortly expand on how you get the VP for the 5 wounds? My reading of the rules is: you sum up all wounds at the end of a battleround with the higher scoring player getting 2VP. (Also: is there a rule that allows to take a pack of 3 Razordons? I thought they are unit type: other and are only allowed double min size in rearguard or min size anywhere else.

Sorry for the offtopic but i always try to get my understanding of the rules straight as english isn't my first language.

Razordons also have range advantage over the salamanders, which makes them better at heroe sniping. And unlike chameleons, they wouldn't dissolve because someone looked in their direction. Still too random to be reliable, imo.

Is there any sort of list in which they’d be workable? I’ve heard it said they’re viable and even good - just not AS good as Salamanders.

If you want to roll with some Razordons, I would say go for it. I havent done the math but I would assume the Starpriest venom is great due to the volume of attacks.

My honest opinion is that there is no scenario where Razordons are ever better than Salamanders. Even the range isnt really a factor, because if you want range the Bastiladon is better at that, does reasonable damage and has really good survivability.

Edit: But at the end of the day, play with what you want to play. Not everything has to be tuned to 11. I know my mates will bring filth to the table and thats just how we like to play.

As a general startegy: blocks of saurus supported by razordons. Saurus go into melee, razordons provide ranged support and snipe the occasional character. Works for both knights & warriors.
Especially knights + razordons should work well. They are equally fast so they can run up the board together the razordon softening up targets before you charge them. Salamanders in this particular scenario are less interesting as they have far bigger a target painted on them (and are thus more likely to get sniped themselves) and the bonus attack during charges is what's most usefull here, both offensivly and defensivly.

The main thing to take into account here however is that razordons won't be the star of the show. There just there to support.

There's also the potential of sticking some razordons in your 2nd line to deter a potential charge. If your block of 40 saurus is followed by 3 razordons it'l be a hell of a lot scarier to charge. 3D6/3+/4+/-1/1 attacks are not something you'd want to be launched in your face for free. This could be increadibly usefull to guide your opponents charges.

Do you think that is likely to happen?

no that would be excessive even by GW standereds at most they will go up to 100 per salamander thats a 25% bump. thats the biggest increase GW has ever done in one go and that was for a much more broken unit

The first thing I'd make with salamanders is giving them artillery role back. Maybe, they should go up by 10 point (+30 pts for the full pack) but other stuff should become cheaper then.

The biggest issue is that such an increase would also immeadiatly make salamanders horrificly overcosted in coalesced armies. Imho, the only way for such a big point increase to happen is for the pointcost for coalesced and starborne to be split (starborne salamanders benefit excessivly from the teleport & bravery of 10, it basicly fixes all the flaws their coalesced versions have)
