So you may have noticed Ive made a few posts about different battalions . just trying to make a list thats fun and can be competitive. So anyone had any luck with a sunclaw starhost. Whats best to run with it?
Im following this. Ive only been able to get one game at 1000 points. It was a crushung loss vs Nighthaunt. Leaders Saurus Sunblood (120) - General - Trait: Thickly Scaled Hide - Artefact: Blade of Realities Skink Starpriest (80) - Artefact: Incandescent Rectrices Battleline 10 x Saurus Warriors (100) - Clubs 10 x Saurus Warriors (100) - Clubs 30 x Saurus Warriors (300) - Spears Units 1 x Salamanders (40) 1 x Salamanders (40) 1 x Salamanders (40) 3 x Skink Handlers (40) Battalions Sunclaw Starhost (130) Total: 990 / 1000 Extra Command Points: 1 Allies: 0 / 200 Wounds: 73 Im currently building this core into this 2k list. Leaders Slann Starmaster (260) - General - Trait: Great Rememberer - Artefact: Incandescent Rectrices Saurus Astrolith Bearer (160) Saurus Sunblood (120) - Artefact: Blade of Realities Skink Starpriest (80) Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur (260) - Artefact: Relic Blade Saurus Scar-Veteran on Carnosaur(240) - Warblade Battleline 30 x Saurus Warriors (300) - Spears 10 x Saurus Warriors (100) - Clubs 10 x Saurus Warriors (100) - Clubs Units 1 x Salamanders (40) 1 x Salamanders (40) 1 x Salamanders (40) 3 x Skink Handlers (40) Battalions Sunclaw Starhost (130) Fangs of Sotek (70) Total: 1980 / 2000 Extra Command Points: 2 Allies: 0 / 400 Wounds: 110 Dont read too much into the artefact choices. I have no idea what I'm doing
The list I use most often is this- Leaders- Saurus Sunblood(140) -General -Blade of Realities -Thickly Scaled Hide Battleline- 40x Saurus Warriors(400) -Spears 40x Saurus Warriors(400) -Spears 40x Saurus Warriors(400) -Spears 10x Skinks(60) -Javelins Behemoths- Troglodon(160) Troglodon(160) Troglodon(160) Battalions- Sunclaw Starhost (130) Total- 2010/2000 Command Points- 1 Allies- 0/400 Wounds- 174
I just tend to advance forward with the Brick O' Saurus, with the trogs behind them as what equates to supporting artillery, and when someone invariably comes to grips with my saurus, I LoSaT The Trogs behind them (or just make room for them in the wall) and The vast majority of things I face (*COUGH* DAUGHTERS OF KHAINE *COUGH*) just fold under the withering fire of spears and spit, with the extra skink unit to hold homefield objectives.
I haven't tried this, but I wanna run Realm of shadow Slann -great remember Sunblood - coronal shield ( try and blind people this could be changed) Old blood on carno - dimonsional blade(-3 rend for his spear) Scar vet on carno - sword of judgment( d6 mortals on hit rolls of 6) Skink starpriest 40 saurus 10 saurus 10 saurus Sunclaw & fangs of Sotek Cogs This leaves 220 points for either a stegadon or a EoG or could take an astrolith bearer, bailwind, and quicksilver swords or shackles or maelstorm. Comes down to taking another -3 rend option via the stegadon, more summoning/mortals from EoG, or more summoning and buffs for the army. You start your turn 1 with 4 command points. I would try and get the scar vet on carno and oldblood on carno into some juicy targets turn 2 and blow at least 3 command points on the oldbloods command ability to give them both 6 extra attacks. If you take the astrolith bearer and he is in range you can save command points by not using the sunbloods ability. Could also take vast intellect on slann.
I recently played a game with a nurgle player, he had a unit of 15 Blight kings which came into contact with my own unit of 30 saurus, highly outwounded. But the Sunclaw Starhost was insanely powerful, the -1 rend is huge and with a little help form a bastiladon I was able to take em out with 3 saurus remaining, tough losses but overall my saurus only cost 300 his blightkings= 480, plus he had a few chaos warriors attempt to help, also killed those. Over all I highly recommend the Sunclaw starhost, it’s been really good to me.
Against a chaos army a sunclaw is briljant, it doesn't matter how few saurus are left they'l remain a threat, especially if he has some daemons around.
@Torxhol Drakescale FYI, A unit of 40x Warriors is only 360, not 400. That will drop your overall points by 120.
If I am running a Sunclaw I always try to use the realm (I forget which on) that gives the artifact that gives +1/+1 to hit and wound on the Sunblood so that his D3 effects trigger on 5+ instead of 6+. Amberglaive or something like that I think
@ILKAIN Ghyrstrike is what you're thinking of and it's amazing on the Sunblood. Weapon of Ghyran - Ghyrstrike: Pick one of the bearer’s melee weapons to be Ghyrstrike. Add 1 to hit and wound rolls for this weapon. Weapon of Ghur - Amberglaive: Pick one of the bearer’s melee weapons to be an Amberglaive. Add 1" to the Range characteristic of that weapon (to a maximum of 3"). In addition, add 1 to hit rolls for that weapon.
@CitizenCake As far as I know, maxed model units point reduction only shows up in the Warscroll builder, and it does not apply to all units. If it were written down anywhere, I'm guessing it would be on a Warscroll, or maybe Core Rules, or General's Handbook. As you can see in the attached image, Knights and Guard don't get this benefit, but Warriors do.
It's in the general's handbook, and in battletomes that actually show point costs. It'l list a cost per increment, and a cost for a max sized unit if applicable.
