Hello! First post, so please be gentle if this had been covered before. Long story short, I got to experience my first 2000 points game a few days ago. The opponent was playing Sylvaneth, with Alarielle in play. My question is, how do you deal with her Metamorphosis without suddenly having Sylvaneth woods sprouting all over the place? Side note, both me and my coplayers are beginners. So if the answer may seem obvious to some, it isn't to me. Thanks in advance!
Welcome to the forums! I have a few clubmates who play Sylvaneth. Generally I use skinks to camp their woods and the various points on the table where they want to spawn them.
Oh. Ooooh! Oh I see. Her spell has to kill a unit in order to spawn, not just one model! Seems my friend misread the rules a little bit, since he claimed that a model needs to be slain. Hence I thought that makes using any sort of chaff when playing against Alarielle detrimental.
Correct. The wording can be a bit difficult for newer players as it uses both key terms "UNIT" and "MODEL". Effectively the spell must kill off an entire UNIT to trigger that second part and then the wild wood must be set up within 12" of the last MODEL from that UNIT to be slain by the spell. so if the UNIT consists of a single MODEL (like a monster or a hero) then yes only one MODEL needs to be killed, but for a horde of SKINKS... it has to kill all of them. It means it matters the order in which the Sylvaneth opponent removes their models, and if they're smart they can force the Sylvaneth Player to put the trees in a bad spot, or not put them up at all due to the placements restrictions. But that's advanced tactics, and you should only worry about learning the game and having fun for now.
Thank you for the insight and advice. This will certainly help in culling my Sylvaneth player's botanical aspirations. Now to just figure out how to protect my Slann from his ranged attacks..
There are a lot of ways to make your Slann more durable, here are my favorites. Rules: Cover (in terrain): +1 to save Look out sir! (3 or more nearby friendly models): -1 to hit Endless spells: Balewind vortex: +1 to save Chronomantic cogs: Re-roll failed save rolls Spells: Summon Starlight: -1 to hit Artifacts: Gryph-feather Charm. -1 to hits targeting the bearer, and +1" to movement. Miasmatic Blade. Attacks that target the bearer get -1 hit.
and due to the changes in rules (BWV doesn't grant a terrain bonus anymore) you can stack terrain and the BVW for +2 to save!
Wait.. Is there a-.. Actually, I suppose I'm drifting off topic, but I hope it is okay to do that? Anyway, can you technically reach 1+ save? .. And on that topic, what happens when due to Rend being high, a unit's save becomes 7+ or more?
you can reach 1+, but a one is always a fail. if a units save is pushed below 6+ to a 7 or more, they simply cant make the save roll, as a 6 is NOT always a save. a 1 is always a fail on hit, wound and save rolls. a 6 is always a success on hit and wound rolls.
Last night I read through the new Sylvaneth Battletome, and I am torn between being disappointed that the Wargrove bataillons are gone (I liked the one that could bring any Order wizard), and liking the new rules. Some nice stuff in there though. And strong stuff to boot. Not all of them are easy to grasp though so don't be too hard to your friend, especially if he isn't a very experienced player yet.
