Just watched the 1984 movie, which was weird but drew heavily on the books themselves.

Loved reading the books; I have only read the first three in their entirety. The universe is pretty epic, and is one of the main inspirations for the 40K universe (empire/emperor, noble houses, navigators, space marines, psykers…).

There is also a (supposedly really complicated) board game, anyone play it?

I read the books (well... most of them. I think I didn't finish #6 because it was just too weird/boring for me).
I also watched the 1984 movie and parts of the TV short series that was released in... 2000 I think.

Loved the books. The film is awfully brilliant, if you get my meaning. I think it's great but it's no oscar winner and poor compared to the book.

Definitely influenced 40k and a lot of other sci-fi.

Agreed. Parts were a bit rough to watch, but it pretty much mirrored what the universe would look like in my opinion. Dont know where the sonic weapons came from though...

I think I read the first four books. Not sure where I left off.

    But...

Saurduarkar =/= Stormtroopers =/= Spez Marines

They aren't completely analogous of course, but the foundation for what later became the spez mareens of the 80s was laid down by the saurduarkar Dune.

Saurduarkar were supersoldiers (not sure if there was genetic stuff or not) who came from a horrible planet (death world) where their very existance past the age of 15 was a feat of strength and bravery. Many were criminals and gang members, then taken from the mean streets and given training, conditioning, and awesome weaponry that were used by the emperor to strike fear into his enemies. They had no equal on the battlefield (until they met the Fremen) and the mere mention of their use was enough to bring the houses of the Landsraad into compliance most of the time.

I often think of the Saurduarkar of the Dune universe as similar to members of the Night Lords or Luna Wolves legions.

That being said, what the space marines have evolved into since their initial debut in the WH40K universe has far outstripped their Dune universe counterparts in terms of abilities. WH40K tends to dial everything up to 100 and then dial it up again.

I read Dune, Dune Messaih, and Children of Dune. I enjoyed all three. Never continued reading through the series though.

though would be David Lynch's invention, it was a substitute for the Benit Jesuit martial arts they would have learned from the attaries.

You need to be a fan of Dune and know the story.
Each player is a different character and each character plays very differently to the others. Each has their own strengths which helps them to take advantage of situations.
Probably best if you review the below link....

I have all the books, but i don't even recall if i went through all of them.
The first one is an absolute masterpiece.

the movie… well, sometime it remembers me the style of '80 Flash Gordon. But more serious.

    also, related songs:
