8th Ed. Tomb Kings Battle Reports

Okay, so I'll be doing a series of skirmish games with my wife. She'll be using my Lizardmen and I'll be using my Tomb Kings.

First battle report to follow!

I got royally trashed...

 

I guess she has learned the game quickly.

 

I think somewhere you said something about when the time came that your wife would beat you on the tabletop....

Okay, so the noble legions of the Tomb Kings massed to repulse the lesser Lizardmen.



It was a 500 point game, so I took a Level 2 Wizard, 27 Skeletons, 2 chariots and my secret weapon of 3 Sepulchral Stalkers (thinking that they would cause mass killings with the terrible Saurus Initiative). I didn't do too much planning as I wanted my wife to have a win.

She took 10 Skink Skirmishers, 10 Saurus, an Old Blood Cowboy (Steg Helm) and a Skink Priest (she realized at the start that the magic weapon she had given the priest was pointless (very cute).

The god Anubis looked on.



So I got first turn and stayed put. I wanted her troops to move forwards and then I'd have the Stalkers pop up behind her. I had rolled the Skullstorm and the -1 S/T spell so I was a little bummed out by this. I cast the Skull storm and sent it 8" towards her Saurus. I was planning to end the spell next turn juts in case it came back at me. My Chariots fired at the Skinks and killed one of them.

In her turn she moved up the Skinks to shoot at the Chariots and the Saurus towards the Skeletons. She chose to hold back her cowboy and priest (funnily enough it was this inadvertant tactic that would prove to be my downfall, as I was certain they would all have rushed forwards.)



Nothing happened in the magic phase of note. The Skinks did two wounds on one of the Chariots through some decent rolling by her.

My turn two. I revealed the Stalkers much to my wife's dismay. I decided to place their counter about 6" from her back edge and my right side, thinking this would be enough for the scatter (as I didn't want them in front of the Old Blood) and then DISASTER STRUCK



The stalkers would appear off the table! I checked the rules and I figured what would apply would be "not able to be placed" so I rolled on the mishap table and rolled a 1 (GAAAGH) which meant they were lost.

Figuring I would still make a go of it, both Chariots went to charge the Skinks, she wisely chose to shoot at the one with 1 wound left and killed it through some ridiculous rolling....



She had to make sixes and got FOUR of them!?!?!

Right I said, calm down, you can still do impact hits and toast these guys right? RIGHT?!?!?

 

WRONG!!!!!

For unbeknownst to me, these were the handpicked and studiously trained NINJA SKINKS OF HEXOATL!!!!!!

They managed to mostly avoid the impact hits (only 3 hits, one of which didn't wound (GAAGH) and she made one armour save, so only one casualty) then the NINJA'S ATTACKED!!!



She had to roll 4's to hit, WHAT THE HELL WAS HAPPENING?!?! She then caused two wounds on the chariot, lost combat by 1 and was saved as her general was close enough.

Even Anubis was shocked...



From there on, the battle went from bad to worse, the Ninja Skinks killed the second chariot in the next combat phase and I was left with just the Priest and the Skeletons.



Anubis abandoned me and averted her gaze from the battlefield...



The Skeletons charged the Saurus, killed two but got spanked in return and I tried a last ditch casting of the Skullstorm against the Skinks, but it went nowhere, so I conceded.



Humph, so next battle I'm going to put a full planning strategy into this. Evidently she is calling upon the Old Ones to help her win (WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THOSE SKINKS?!?!?!) so I'm going to play for blood next time.

Anubis also admitted defeat...





Still enjoyed it though. Wife is getting better but I still had to help her a lot with the basic sequences and rules. She wants to play more so that she can get into the groove of it.

We're moving ahead!

 

Good battle report. Tough break. Those chariots should have smashed the skinks.

Stalkers are a very risky choice in such a low point game. They did have the potential to do massive damage to the Saurus or kill the Old Blood... but the dice gods are fickle.

IDK... I'm picturing your wife offering you the draw not too long from now...

 

I'm hoping I've kindled some bloodlust in her! It also gives me a bit of practice with Tomb Kings. I would have made it if I'd been a bit more careful wtih the positioning of the counter.

We keep going. And I keep hoping that the f******g coronavirus thing gets handled and I can also get some games in with my other friends as well!

No, she was more concerned that I'd had fun playing with her (as she knows how much I have been pining for a game )

LIZARDS WON! Not even Settra can oppose the Will of the Old Ones.

Seriously, this is just what I expect from someone's first game... gotta love those probability-breaking dice rolls.

 

Jackal is part of the dog family, so I used poetic license

 

True, it was good.
But some might see Anubis for a cat due to the pointy ears
