Sadly true. I used the Warhammer Armies Project for both 7th and 8th edition and was happy. I actually went through my army today and had a moment of army shame. Didn't know I had so many models half done...kind of embarrassing after all this time.

I would have loved to have seen a Dogs of War army brought into the 8th edition fold. They are such a diverse faction with near endless modeling opportunities. I used to love how you could incorporate their units into the rare sections of other (6th edition?) armies.

Well I can't argue with your comments. The Dogs of War are my favorite models by far and it still irks me that I didn't see the writing on the wall earlier and bought more of them. There are few other armies that come close to the Dogs for how nice they look. The rules were sometimes on the conservative side for being overpriced but it was still fun to play.

They were 5th edition IIRC. I think they might have had an update for 6th, but their only book was definitely 5th.

You are correct. I didn't even know they had their own book (5th edition was before my time), but here it is...

I didn't come into contact with them until 6th edition where I had a pdf that I got off of the old GW site I believe (although I could be mistaken). I had never seen anyone play them as a dedicated faction but had heard of people including a unit into their existing 6th edition armies as a rare choice (as outlined in the army books). A friend of mine had picked up a bunch of Cursed Company models from back in the day. I think they may have been released after the 5th edition Dogs of War army book, but were later added to the force.

it's nice how the claws of the lion-cape seem to "grab" the treasure's chest... the only thing that matters!

Well to quote the animated version of the Hobbit. "Kill the men, kill the elves, save the gold for ourselves." Inspired words indeed.

@BrotherSutek , curious, what was your favourite Dogs of War unit? What about your favourite Dogs of War character?

What do you think would be needed to be added to the Dogs of War army to make them viable in 8th edition? Just point adjustments or are they lacking any key units?

This kind of opens a barrel of comments and thoughts I've had on this army but I will try to no wander from the original questions. My favorite unit is tough as I have favorite models "looks wise" and "good in game" selections. All of the models tend to be amazing and by far my favorite model line that GW has ever produced. My favorite for character and appearance is Pirazzo's Lost Legion although the Giants of Albion and Voland's Venators are close to my heart with how amazing they look. In actual game use the unit that has always preformed the best is Mengil Manhide's Manflayers and in 8th edition if you get them into a building they are really, really hard to shift. My favorite character is Asarnil The Dragonlord which is a bitter pill as I don't own him as every time I find the model it's either incomplete or out of my price range. The last time I found a perfect one I could afford my wife had just lost her job so I had to be "an adult" and hold off on hobby purchases...not grouchy, not me.

To bring the army into 8th edition was actually done very well by the Warhammer Army Project. While I don't agree with some of the additional choices and in some cases the cost per unit, the overall book is well balanced and I've done well with it. The 7th edition version was solid as well and I'm annoyed that I can't find my copy of it other than the Regiments of Renown. My biggest gripe is the same one I've had since the first time I've played the army and that is finding the balance of enough pikemen and the rest of your army. Pike cost 5 pts and come with light armour but with the pike(fight in 3 extra ranks) being only useful with at least 5 ranks that's minimum of 125pts per unit without any command...which is a steal! If you are playing 8th and you build a horde of 60 that's a 300pt unit that every model can attack from the front! If buffed with magic then you can really start killing but only from the front. Honestly the only unit that I don't like is Tichi-Huchi's Raiders and that's only because we still hit and wound them on the skinks characteristic and not the Cold ones. Fear being less useful makes for most enemy units hitting them on 3's and wounding on 3's at worst. Hope you make those 4 up armour saves! In 7th they were high initiative and/or if you got the charge off then you could hit a unit and hopefully do enough damage that you weren't hit back and then due to being a fear causing unit they would break. Okey I'm getting a rant on so I'll close this with the army mostly needed basic unit choices that are better cost and a recosting of most if not all of the Regiments of Renown as everything was really overcost. Like most human variant armies magic is really important even with the nice options for troops that can shore up any weaknesses. I do like that there are built in balance mechanics such as halfing won't work for an army that has ogres in it and also the no dwarves and greenskins in same army. This makes the army more thematic and not just all the best units. Obviously I can and will talk about this army for days and welcome any discussions on them.

    Very cool!

The odds may be slim, but maybe they will make it into the The Old World game down the line.

Thanks! I honestly doubt we will ever see a return other than possibly in the computer game. I won't give up hope but the odds are against it happening.

Maybe the an inclusion in Total War: Warhammer might be the ticket to get them back on the table top. If they prove to be popular in the game, GW might take note, plus the game will provide a template for an updated range of models.

That would be amazing. We have three elven armies don't see why we can't have three human armies.

If they bring Bretonnia back, they'd have 4...
    • Empire
    • Bretonnia
    • Kislev
    • Cathay

Dogs of War are a good mix though.

In some sense the chances go down, but on the other hand, it shows that GW is willing to bring more obscure forces to the forefront of the game. Long shot, but you never know.

GW better include the Chaos Dwarfs though!

It was always strange that they didn't for so long. In my group we had a chaos dwarf player and I started one until I saw how pricey hobgoblins were and how scarse!

Official models are very expensive. There are lots of other good alternatives though. Some third party companies have released some really impressive Chaos Dwarf model lines.

Now, sadly not the case 15 years ago when I was trying to build the army. The only things I kept were the bolt throwers for my greenskins.
