With a big to do list I thought it’s about time I start a blog to get involved and for some feedback (and accountability)!

I’ve been trying to work my way through the SC Seraphon and Celestial Stampede boxes before dusting off my old lizards and giving them the cold blooded love they deserve.

Bastiladon - the first of the big guys I painted

Stegadon chief - fully magnetised options!

Apologies for the slightly blurry photos and inconsistent set up!

I got the Vallejo Game colours set, which has a nice variety of colours, and started to explore ink washes (read Nuln Oil) and dry brushing. I realised too late the importance of shaking the everything well so everyone’s a bit glossy unfortunately! I’m very much a beginner so feedback is very welcome. Other techniques or where to go next much appreciated - especially basing. Thanks!

Welcome to the community and welcome to the Blog life!

The colors look awesome on that Basti specifically! It reminds me some of a Nodosaurus (anky type dino) picture ive seen with that same color scheme, looks awesome.

    Looking forward to seeing more!

Thank you, your wish is my command! I accidentally clicked post instead of upload file, so hopefully there are a few more pictures to see now!

Looking good so far! Keep up the good work.
I started with the large Vallejo Game Colour set myself, it's a great starting point. I'd recommend getting a few of the GW washes to compliment your other paints when you can. To solve the glossy finish issue, a quick coat of matt varnish over the model will sort it out :)

Thank you for the kind comments!

Thanks for the advice - matt varnish is on the list to get; I'm going to try to paint all of my built models first then use some spray matt varnish on them all.

Re washes, are there any ones that are more ubiquitous or useful for beginners? I'm assuming Nuln oil is in that category, rightly or wrongly! I do already have Agrax Earthshade and then the old Green wash and Flesh wash from 15+ years ago as they are the only old paints to survive. Thanks again!

All of the GW washes are pretty good to be honest. Nuln Oil and Agrax are the most useful, but the colour washes are handy to have when you need to wash something without dulling it too much or staining it black or brown. Flesh wash is good for gold details of you want a rich warm gold tone.

Spray varnish is a good time saver, I'd make sure to watch some YouTube videos on how to apply it though first. It can almost ruin your paint jobs if applied incorrectly. I tend to use brush on varnish these days instead as it's usually too cold and wet where I am.

Time for some cavalry! I'll always have a soft spot for these guys, probably because 6th and 7th edition cavalry were great!

Converted battle standard bearer on cold one. Tried some drybrush highlights and jade shield/weapons.
Don't think about how much wind resistance comes into play with the banner sides...

Converted saurus cowboy with the burning blade of bonking. First time using green stuff!
Tried jade weapon again - once the base is re-done and no longer bright green (used Army Painter's goblin green undercoat) I think it should pop a lot more.

Some kroxigor to join the team - wondering about using the red skull markings/warpaint on my completed saurus but I think I'll base everything first to see how it all feels as an army!

Some of the saurus with spears - sorry about the camera blur for the ones not immediately in the area of focus, my phone wasn't cooperating!

I really love the deep warm colours on your bastiladon and the blue/purple which pops right off it. Absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you very much! Painting the relatively flat plates with just a little bit of texture was lovely; I didn't really plan it, did a trial run of multiple wet stippling with the colours and it turned out great!

Nice work on your saurus and kroxigors!

    Now... for the bases! :lurking::lurking::lurking:

I always recommend some sand, some bigger pieces of sand, paint it brown, brown wash, then some jungle plants sourced from a local craft or aquarium store.

Yes sir! Skinks done and based! I mixed some poly-filla, cheapo brown paint, and sharp sand, then applied it like a texture paste, gave it a quick dry bush, and done! Unfortunately a lot of brave skinks lost limbs or weapons during their storage in a boot bag with only kitchen roll and some wood elves for company, so most of my blowpipe toting skinks look like they're fighting with a club and cigar!

Next up - Kroq Gar / Oldblood on foot with my first try at OSL. I'm quite happy with the results from just using a paintbrush for it. I love this model so I managed to find an old metal Harlequin base that works at the right angle so he can be used on foot or transferred to his throne on the carnosaur using the power of magnets!

Thank you very much! It took a few attempts to get right but I'm pleased with the results. I'm tempted to get an airbrush but I think my time would be better spent actually painting rather than planning what to get next. Although that is basically the curse of this entire hobby!
