    Hey lizardfolk,

In a segue from my all-encompassing blog I present a new thread type for me: the project thread.

In this thread I will make more real-time postings of particular things I do for that project, mainly as motivation to keep going.

I'm also going to post more in depth background musings and explanations. Some of these may seem redundant but I'm basically going to be using this thread like a internet-public notebook and record of work.

Any models here will still show up in my main blog in a highlight form.

You may see several of these project threads from me in the future.

The Guild Myrmidian is my new name for an AoS Cities of Sigmar project I've had planned out a bit in advance.

I need to build an army from the conquistadors set from Wargames Atlantic. Partially because I'm working on the armies for a set piece fight between Aztecs and conquistadors as a demo of the usability of the kits. Partly for self gratification purposes because my name is on the box.

That army would need to be based for block formation warfare, which age of Sigmar is not.

So I'm round basing these and eventually will be using bases with magnet capabilities.

So, double duty, which means the paint scheme isn't necessarily going to be historical.

But that's ok because I'm basing this army off the yellow/red combination of taalabecland, which is conveniently the royal colors of Spain.

This project is going to sit as a floater in between my Aztecs and my commission work.

First on the docket are 5 halberdiers and 1 arquebusier, which have been primed at a mid-tone to play nice with contrast but also be a decent primer for Metallics.

I'm really not. if I averaged a unit per week I'd be happy.

If I averaged that, I'd be over the bloody moon.

I've finished 1 1/2 units in about 3 months... So to me your speed is light speed.

The Lord Marcus' guide to speeding up your painting for a table top army:

    1. Historical vs fantastical. Is the army required to be painting in historically accurate colors, completely fantastical, or somewhere in between?

Once you've established that there are two divergent paths.

    Historical project:

Find historical references for colors. Wood and leather items are your freebies.

I need to finish this post in 20 minutes, brb

Alright since @Lizards of Renown asked, fantasy:

for the sake of simplicity, I'm assuming contrast paints are in use and you are priming with an off-white mid tone like the bone camo color i do.

    1. Choose your primary color. This is going to not only define the models in the unit immediately on your painting desk, but also the entire army you create.

    2. Use color theory where applicable, and choose a secondary color. For example, Red (primary) and Yellow (secondary) for my Guild Myrmidian.

    3. Decide leather and wood. Choose your brown tones (1 contrast color each, 1 highlight color each). Do you want leather to be light or dark? how about wood like spear hafts and banners? make sure this looks complimentary to your primary color.

    4. Decide general metallic. Choose 1 color, like leadbelcher, and choose 1 coloring variant (For silvers, you can do blueing, blackened, etc)

    5. Decide the skin tone of the majority of the dudes you want to paint. If you occasionally swap pots to a different skin tone or a lighter highlight color, it provides variation.

Take those base colors, line them up, opaques then at the end metallics. special effects paints for characters and whatnot are of course on a separate run, and metallics have a separate water pot to reduce contamination.

Take 5 of your base, standard infantry. the thing you have 100 of to paint. like clan rats or in my case aztecs and conquistadors.

use those 5, and an hour of your time, to suss out the best order for your paints so as to increase speed.

then, its just a matter of repeating the same steps ad nauseum, working on a rank as your primary board and then having the rest of the unit to rotate through.

for example. Stage 1 is drying on models 1-5, refresh your brush and go do it on 6-10, then so on.

even if you only work on 10 at a time you are still increasing your speed in painting baseline infantry.

    FINALLY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

WRITE YOUR STEPS, AND YOUR PAINTS OUT. IN A NOTEBOOK. OR ON INDEX CARDS. LABEL THEM WITH THE UNIT TYPE, AND IN MY CASE THE ARMY/PROJECT.

BOOM, YOU NOW KNOW EXACTLY YOUR WAY OF PAINTING CLANRATS AT A SPEED THAT WILL MAKE THROTT THE UNCLEAN GRIMACE.

For me the problem is hobby-time. It's few and far between.

I'll take any tips on speeding up painting purely fantasy models though. I'm doing nothing historical.

This will give you all an idea of the scheme.
