Sup everybody! I'm currently in the process of making my Carnosaur, and I'm starting to think about the base. I really think I want to do something similar to this. I want the Carno to be leaping off of some old broken ruins. I don't want to do it quite like that model; I feel like it looks too much like just rocks with cool bits stuck to it. I'm thinking I would prefer something that looks more directly ruinous, like some of this miniwargaming terrain. My main issue is with materials; figuring out what would work best. I see a lot of pink foam being used for things like this, but I'm unsure about the level of detail I could get. Any suggestions on how to move forward with this, or tips on how to create Lizardmen ruins in general?
That's what I've gathered, but at my local Lowe's all they had was blue board that was only a quarter of an inch thick, which wouldn't really work for making a pillar, unless I just broke down and glued them together in a cube.
They make it up to 3" but yea gluing smaller sheets together is good too. Oh somebody has a decent spray adhesive that works with foam, ask Lowe's if they have it. Ps, you can also use white Styrofoam, but it need a bit more surface protection. Pps. also maybe a hot-knife for cutting (melting really) foam.
That's what I did. Just make sure that you a apply pressure to it. I applied the glue, and put some dumbbells on it (with a wooden board between the polystyrene and the weights to make sure the polystyrene was not damaged). There are lots of glues that should do the job nicely. If you're melting the foam, make sure you do it in a well ventilated area as it will release toxic fumes.
you could use something like this and add more detail to it, http://www.base-x-of-war.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=33_81&product_id=180
I did something similar with one of my Treemen, but I had him leaping into battlle off a rock (made of Pine Bark). The key with doing that was making sure that he was pinned and glued really well. I actually wound up using a little green stuff as well as super glue after pinning him because there was so much weight putting pressure on that connection.
Oh hey, no prob. It was worth a share! I have some imitation bark made of cork (that I got from a pet store... it was appropriately a shelter for reptiles!), that I use for rocks and the like and it works great. However for this project, I want it to look a bit more geometrical. I went to Home Depot instead of lowes, and found some much better, pink insulation foam in more manageable sheets. It should work perfectly, if I can keep my hand steady enough to get some good carving.
"umm... well" I didn't know that, thought it was just some sort of product made from soaking wood shavings in water to make it spongy. The bark I bought was advertised as being imitation. The more you know I guess. It's pretty cool stuff regardless, works great to look like rocks once painted.
Here's the result! I think it's a success! It's not 100% finished (I think I am going to cover up the Carno's foot-thing with moss), but the foam worked really well. I had some trouble with the humidity in getting a smooth coat of primer, but I think it worked out to my benefit. It gave the stone a very cool worn look. Thoughts?
