Yeah they are a bit all one tone at the moment -- Incubi Darkness is what I sprayed my Saurus. I washed the models in blue. But just the scaley parts I then did a blue wash, purple wash, another blue, and another purple. I wanted the feeling that the scales were a harder texture then the fleshy parts. I'm just unsure as to what color to 'lighten' and highlight the 'fleshy parts' of the Saurus. For the Temple Guard carrying the Slann I used purple on the scales. And although I like it for the Temple Guard carrying the Slann I am unsure if I will like it across the whole army -- feel it may look too 'cartoony' where as the ones carrying the Slann its just that those ones are 'special'. I'm just brainstorming here share what ya think
what you should do then is highlight with a grey and then glaze apply bigger highlights than you think you need, I would go celestal grey and then ceramaite white with a final highlight of scar white and then apply a glaze in the tint you want (yellow, green etc) when you do the glaze do around 6 coats and it will help blend the grey/white highlights, once dry you can then spot highlight if needed. Make sure you let each glaze coat dry fully as it always drys darker then you think.
So heres what I did so far. Primed with Incubi Darkness. Scales got blue and purple washes. For fleshy parts one was painted with Teclis blue and given blue wash; the other had fleshy parts painted in dawnstone and given a purple wash. Cant decide what I like better. I want to go for the whole celestial demon vibe. Unsure what to do figured Id ask opinions.
Tough choice, blue looks more like the night sky, but that purple looks really good. I think the blue, the purple looks more daemon and less celestial!
Ugh I know I am so torn - I truly can't decide and its killing me lol. The purple does really -pop- tho and looks very different then the standard Lizardmen also however I'd have to change my shield idea from the Slann too. So so torn and cant decide. I just knew I didnt want them to be green or red as I have many Orcs, Goblins and Khorne worshippers/demons.
I'd also have an easier time with highlights on the blue one then I would with the purple (since its grey with purple wash)
Here is a pic of both test models by themself as well as with a Bloodletter of mine. One of the things I'd like to portray with my lizardmen - at least with the Saurus is try to make them visually 'opposite' of Chaos demons. Still struggling with color scheme descions so thought I'd put these pics up as well.
I think if you want more visual distance from your bloodletters you should go with the blue. More night sky like too!
I'm doing Arkhan atm and I'm using Incubi darkness alot, what I have found so far is for shading use Coelia greenshade as it is the same tone. so I have not shaded all I'm doing is base Incubi, layer 1 Celestral grey, Layer 2 white and then apply the Coelia greenshade but in a 1/1 mix with medium then apply a highlight after you can use green, blue, grey but go pale. I have painted his cloak Celestral grey blending into Incubi using the above shading technique and it works well.
Yes the blue one is more different form the daemon. but the purple one looks very nice, too... might try a brighter blue maybe? cause the daemon looks quite dark might add a bit more contrast. But this night sky color seems quite fitting...
Yeah I cant decide really. I jsut ordered Sotek Green/Blue and TempleGuard Green/Blue (forget which is which) to test out on lighting the skins. I just want to figure out my color scheme for my Saurus warriors as I am so excited to paint them.
well if what you want is a contrast with the daemons, i also think the blue does a better job, but i also like the purple quite a lot. How hard do you want that contrast?
This is a really good look! Still dark sky, but with the purple more like a winter twilight. Quite nice!
I wanted to try and make a Saurus hero on foot using the left over front torso part, legs, arms and awesome head from the Oldblood on Carnosaur kit. I hacked up a Temple Guard to make the back part of the body for him, bent the tail back and with a ton of glue and multiple curses got it to stick right. Now I jsut cant decide what to turn him into. I originally wanted to make an Eterinty Warden but I really wanted to use the cool Saurus head peices from the kit. Also there is no two handed weapon in that kit so I would of had to really chop up more arms. Was going to attempt to use Ork Nob arms but they dont look like they'd fit right. The next choice would be another Oldblood (this one on foot) or the Sunblood. I figure for the Sunblood I'll just take the mace arm from the Warrior kit and glue the hand to the arm from the Oldblood as weapon -- fist doesnt look MUCH smaller and it fits fine. Will use the shield from the Carnsaur kit as well. Well here are the pics so far. I plan on patching in the holes by covering with bits of armorplates or whatever I can find.
i glues some of the armor plates on and attached the hand to see what its like. I think he can be either an Oldblood with Maul or a Sunblood. When I paint him Ill add the shield from the carnosaur kit.
