Hi everyone. As it is the first time I attempt to paint a whole army I decided to make some concept-coulor sketches before putting my hands ont he actual miniatures, to test out colour schemes and get a 'feel' of what my lizards should look like. Here are a couple of them. They are on gouache (opaque watercolour) on poor quality sketchbook paper. I really enjoyed the process so it is likely I will attempt more sophisticated pieces View attachment 47205 View attachment 47206 View attachment 47207
Hey those are all really nice! Considering you label them "sketches" they look really great. You have captured the shape, color, scales, and overall essence of each of the figures very nicely. I really like how you have painted the scales, and that slann looks great! And I like your lettering choice. Well done!
I agree, nice job! And yeah that's a good way of testing a color scheme. I use overpaints over photographs usually (because I lack the skill to draw the models) but your way has the benefit of producing cool artwork as well as helping you find the paint scheme you want to use.
Thank you very much! These paintings really helped me a lot. For example, i think the light ochre belly and tail decorations for the Skinks make them more natural and interesting while keeping the classical Lizardmen blue. The world is full of weird color patterns in reptiles and birds, and I would expect extravagant patterns even in dinosaurs. I think the various Skink units in the army will vary in colour in my army. Also, I believe the bright high chroma orange and blue with darker red scales really work well on the Salamander which is such a great unit but such a poor model. In the next days I'll make and hopefully post more of these. Will also make some more refiend work for the behemots.
Here's my idea for Sunblood/Gor Rok. The pose is from a converted Carno rider. I wanted him to stand out from the regular Saurus and keep some sort of albino theme without him looking monotonous. 10x12cm or something like that, gouache on paper. Took about 1 h and half from start to finish. . Looks pretty good to me. So pink yet so brutal!
