If I use the Fangs of Sotek, do I have to have my general be a Saurus? As starborne it additionally cripples one of the unique features of starborne... summoning. If a Saurus has to be your general then you automatically miss out on one of the few sources of summoning points we actually had... D3 for slan/skink* general. Am I reading the constellations correctly?
I don’t think it means your general has to be Saurus, only that if it is, it must use that command trait and if it isn’t, you don’t get the exclusive trait that comes with the constellation. I’m pretty sure there’s nothing stopping you from taking a Slann or Skink general in Fangs of Sotek
The General does not have to be a Saurus. However, if it is a Saurus then it must have the command trait Grizzled Veteran.
Thats what I originally thought. A friend compared it to his FEC book and said that it was mandatory. Do we still get to pick a different command trait? Or is it a, you get this one under these conditions or nothing else?
IF your general is a Saurus you have to pick that trait. If your general is a Slann or Skink you can pick what you want.
You can pick a Skink or Slann trait if either is your general. I don't know what the FEC book says, but ours is pretty flexible to be honest, all do to the wording of each one of the rules that we interact with.
Okay so I appreciate people's help but now I think I'm more confused. xD I thought generally things like the constellations for other factions locked you into specific things. Limiting command traits and artifacts for the bonus if special rules. But the community seems to read it as just more flexibility? I can see how other factions would raise an eyebrow at our special sub faction extra bonuses with so much flexibility. From the looks of things the issue has to do with the vague nature of wording for our book. Is there any general rules on these types of sub factions that I could quote to help clear things up. At least more so then "well it doesn't explicitly say I can't" (cause at first glance as an opposing player it reads you have to take a saurus if you want to use the FoS keyword). I guess I'm just looking for a more concise counter argument.
There are no specific rules regarding subfactions. It is only the rules within the subfaction. So yes, we do have greater flexibility than other subfactions do with Command traits specifically.
there's a recent post somewhere showing a F.A.Q. about the greenskin tome where you have a similar issue with generals for subfactions. It explains that you can take whatever general you want and only if you take that specific one you're locked into the trait. This is different from most other tomes as most other tomes don't specify a specific general.
the fec book says a [grand court] general must have this command trait. Seraphon book says a [constellation] [slann, saurus, Saurus, or monster] general. so you can take a different command trait as long as you don’t make one of those your general
