Hey guys, what’s the consensus on the best weapon to give the on foot old blood? Thanks for the help!

math wise warblade but you don't want him in melee he isn't good at it and you take him for the buffs not his fighting, he can't buff people if he is dead

Are our close combat heroes mainly mounted?

Mostly all the punching power is just in the foot troops not the heroes. We have several on foot and mounted options, but out of the on foot ones the sun blood is the only one who's any good in melee.

I like the Celestial Maul for the Oldblood. The main reason is that it can spike higher damage. And seeing as I really don't want to send the Oldblood into combat I am operating under the assumption that if he is combat it is because I am needing luck to win. At which point I would rather the weapon with the most room for luck to happen. The spear could be viable if you are fighting enemy units with 1" reach and you are behind a rank of Saurus though. War Blade is an okay platform for an artefact weapon.

I think I need to reality check myself from the days of warhammer fantasy where characters did the hitting backed up by units. So instead of seeing him as a combat hero on foot I need to see them as buffing characters to saurus troops? Am I finally getting it? lol

yep if you run saurus you want a old blood and a sun blood buffing them. very potent combo

Yep, Sunblood and Oldblood are great. If you play Koatl's Claw then the Sunblood become much more valuable than the Oldblood if you can only fit one or the other though.

in smaller point battles (1k or less, say for an escalation league) putting him into combat is prolly going to happen anyway. in that case the warblade or spear are the better options, depending on whether you put an artifact on it or not, as the higher attack count synergizes with his 2 hits on 6's ability better.

Yeah, the 5 attacks ups the value of the Eviscerating Blade and Blade of Realities. Also, nearly any of the Malign Sorc weapon Artefacts.

Warblade is the best by far. He's never going to be a particularly effective combat hero, but this one is the most reliable & benefits the most from the occasional buffs and artifacts thanks to its high volume of attacks. It also deals the most damage on average (ignoring the effect of rend)

The spear is a bit weird, it's the weakest weapon on average, but it allows you to fight from the second rank, which seems usefull. If he still had an aura than this one would be usefull as it'd make it rather easy to keep your saurus in the aura by just putting him in the middle of their ranks. But without his aura there's not really much point in being that close to the frontline, he's a mediocre fighter at best & his command ability doesn't require him to be that close by.

Maul & Greatblade have the same average performance. Maul is less reliable with the occasional higher pay-off. Neither of them is particularly impressive. And with only 3 attacks you'l regularly miss all of them. Unless you desperatly need the rend, or like @LizardWizard are gambling on one lucky round of combat, I wouldn't bother with these.

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I wish I had reread this thread before my Path to Glory battle this past weekend. The maul was... not great. Or, maybe more to the point, my rolling was not great. Would it really be so bad to have given him a 3+/3+ profile on all of the weapons? Wouldn't it be enough difference to have some weapons with more attacks and some with rend? I don't know, maybe they would be too similar.
