I've helped people move their hobby dreams closer by Posting 11 orders today, and putting a little time into printing.

I also shopped for the household and then made dinner.

    I'm tired .

Not really part of my hobby goals but I am building some models today. Wargames Atlantic goths for webstore examples and potentially use in hail Caesar

Also, I took on a diorama/research display project due in January. More on that soon.

Do you want imperial knight household troops? Do you not want to break the budget for cool new knightly weapons?

The new war games Atlantic goths in conjunction with the death Fields accessories through can help you get there. PXL_20220805_021734530.jpg PXL_20220804_051806347.jpg

Applied GW varnish to all the recent models I uploaded. Very pissed off.
Possibly the can wasn't shaken enough or the climate wasn't right but ended up with a horrible white frost over all the models.
I tried rubbing it off with a cotton bud and water but with no success.
However I stumbled across a solution online that worked brilliantly.

    1. Apply a coat of olive oil all over model with a cotton bud (Q Tip)
    2. Let it sit for about 2 hours.
    3. Apply a hair drier to the model
    4. Reapply varnish.

The frosting is something to do with the water vapour (humidity) in the air.

That would be correct. Usually humidity above 80% is what causes that, depending on location/season.

Yep I’ve had that, most annoying, but great to hear that you’ve found a solution to it! I must try that with my models that have suffered from this!

So I finally gave in to playing SPQR for once with my collection of Britons among my local gaming group. Thus far the campaign we've been doing has been going quite well.

At the moment, my warband consists of the following units at 639 denarii in total:

    - Level 2 Hero w/ sword, large shield and chainmail shirt (+1 Melee, +1 Melee Dice, Voice of Command, Inspire, and Heroic Rush)
    - Level 2 Hero w/ sword, large shield and chainmail shirt (+1 Melee, +1 Melee Dice, Divine Luck, Blessed at Birth [+1 Armour], Wall of Iron)
    - Level 1 Hero(ine) w/ 2x swords and leather armour (+2 Melee Dice, Wall of Iron, Rain of Blades)
    - Level 1 Druid w/ dagger (+2 Bravery, Healing Hands, Medicus)
    - 10x Warriors w/ short spears, large shields, and chainmail shirts
    - 10x Tribesmen w/ slings

This has been in the wake of my most recent game against a 488 denarii Greek warband (my opponent elected to hire 9 Balaeric slingers as mercenaries to compensate) in which the two sword & board heroes managed to tank and defeat a unit of 10 peltasts, followed by a unit of 12 hoplites and accompanying heroes, at the cost of a 12-man bodyguard of warriors and the dual-wielding heroine (this was her first time on the table). This won me the game, and in turn got them enough experience points to be eligible to level up.

Of the casualties inflicted on my warband, I would have needed to replace 2 tribesmen and 5 warriors, and my dual-wielding heroine is having to sit out the next game. I didn't have much in my treasury after the game to be able to afford the two Level 2 upgrades and complete replacement for my losses however, so I elected to leave out 2 warriors to do so.

Glad to see someone else playing SPQR! Any pictures? :snaphappy:

Good job on beating that Phalanx, I thought the one unit of Warriors you had was 10 models in size? Because you later refer to is as being 12...

Interesting to see you've gone for spamming Heroes, though they'll need bodyguard units as your army develops if they don't want to get pincushioned by missile troops or swarmed by a large melee unit (which will happen as your armies increase in size)

What factions are your gaming group fielding?

I kind of figured as much, though I'm not the only one doing it in my group. It's also pretty much why my only Warrior unit is equipped to the nines with chainmail and short spears at the moment. I'll definitely be looking at having more than just the one Warrior and Tribesman unit each as I build the army up though.

The biggest consideration for me has been that chariots can only be taken on a one-per-hero basis, and having just one or two charioteers isn't likely going to be enough by the time I'm able to afford them (army first).
So far we've got British Tribes, Romans, Dacians, and Corinthians (can't recall off the top of my head which Greek city-state was used to represent them), and potentially have Gauls and Persians as well.

Chainmail warriors are certainly a good thing to have as they're the main way to bring some armour into your force, and make the best bodyguard unit for heroes because they won't die to a stiff breeze and can still pack a punch. I agree that at such a small points value you are certainly more restricted, but it will be worth it to include more units as the army builds up, particularly with regards to your Druid - he's very lightly armoured and vulnerable to being shot at if he strikes out on his own, but if he's part of a unit he is nigh-unkillable, as missile units won't be able to target him directly and he can duck out of challenges without penalty.

40 Denarii isn't too much for a Chariot (equivalent to two Warriors with Chainmail in the original edition), and to be honest one could consider them more useful in the early stages of a Campaign because they give lower-level Heroes more wounds than they normally would have.

I was planning to write a fan-made list for Corinthians, as they were the only Greek City-State to have armoured archers allegedly, though I would assume that the Athens list was used as the basis in this case, as they are the only one of the three Greek lists that can field archers that are not Psiloi.

Persians look nasty in campaign because they have an in-built shortcut to replacing slain Immortals (they can upgrade Levies to Immortals free of charge, so they only need to pay the reduced cost of replacing more levies).

A good selection of opponents, though, I look forward to hearing how the campaign progresses! I quoted your batrep in the Historical Gaming Thread, so posting future batreps there would be a great way to get some discussion going!

Bastards, the lot of ye. Here I was, perfectly content to just work on my Knolloss (Gnoll) army and my lizardmen, and now I'm looking into seeing if Carthage is an option...

Sadly Carthage isn't playable out of the main SPQR rules, probably because Warlord have never made a Carthaginian range, but I am working on a fan-made rules expansion that will include the Carthaginians (probably alongside the Corinthians funnily enough), so I'll drop it over in a PM when it's finished if you're interested.

At the start of the school vacation I had promised my son he could paint another model of MESBG.
Yesterday I finally had time to set things up for him to paint.

With now two models painted by him we played a little battle of 100 points (with simple rules)
He was super excited during the whole game, this was helped by the fact that he obliterated my force

    It was fun nonetheless :)

Carthage would be a fun army to play with - able to take light Levy troops in the style of the Persians, some phalanx Hoplite-style troops as per Greeks, elephants, and as an army they would have to have a special rule that allows them to take a discount on mercenaries (as in Vercingetorix's rule in the SPQR rulebook that gives Gaul players a discount on mercenaries from their own faction). They would also be able to take a frakload of the different Mercenary troop options available in the back of the book:
    • Numidian Javelinmen
    • Numidian Cavalry
    • Balearic Slingers
    • Gaesatae
    • I would have thought Greek Hoplites too due in the case of allies from Syracuse
Plus the option to take Mercenaries from Gaul or Iberia. Carthage would be a tough nut to crack due to its ability to play a wide array of different strategies. Probably the only disadvantage it may have is that I wouldn't imagine it would be able to field cavalry in its own army list, but that can easily be amended by taking Gallic Horsemen and Numidian Cavalry as mercenary heavy and light cavalry respectively.
