I wasn't either till Storm of Chaos came out and I was given the option to field an entire army of them! It's not a very effective army and gun lines hurt a lot but the glory of seeing all those madmen charging across the field... also if they table you it's thematic that they get their end. Side note I forgot to put Gotrek and Felix in the photo.

....... okay, first off, don't mock the Slayer army. I fought that before during the Storm of Chaos, with both my Dark Elves and the all-Orcs army from the Storm of Chaos (Bolgut Facebeater was loads of fun). They were hard to deal with, having their own version of Night Goblin Fanatics, but much more durable than some weedy goblins. Second off, awesome army no matter how you slice it! :)

That's a grudgin. I wouldn't be building the army if I didn't think it was good. I'm glad it's more effective, from your experience, than I have seen. I have to deal with a lot of shooting armies, VC and Chaos so from the testing it's been an uphill battle. Currently searching for a Garagrim model that isn't over $70. Same with Ungrim as those tend to be incomplete models if you find them at reasonable cost.

How very timely, with the new Slayer Army of Infamy in the War of Settra's Fury Arcane Journal now being available for perusal!

From what I've heard they've done some more to help Slayers in the durability department they normally lack, with the ability to take a cheap 6+ Ward Save on any unit for +1 point per model, Ambushers on one unit, every unit getting a small pre-battle move and the Bugman's Cart which increases friendly units' movement to 4" as most other races have.

@BrotherSutek I'll be interested to see how well the new version of the army performs at any rate... if you pick up the Journal let us know how it goes!

I'm still playing 7th edition with 6th edition armybooks but I've been looking at the new rules. Those things sound great! I like getting closer as my poor dwarves are slow. One thing I've seen so far is my slayers pirates are targeted early and often, firepower and toughness isn't to be sneered at. Annoyingly the group I play with has had life come at them and gaming has been minimal.

It's nice to be able to field the cart as something besides terrain or an objective!

To be honest it's been an issue for Dawi in every edition, but Drilled + Marching Column is a particularly big help in TOW, and the Bugman's Cart can offset it to a point, as it bumps all units in range up to the Infantry movement stats of most other races.

Very true, I used to get around it with the Anvil and Strollas Rune, with miners, gyros and rangers as some of my favorite units. In a world of gun line dwarf armies I was the crazy movement guy. Must be my Wood Elf Sethayla tendencies showing through.

Hmm. First off, VC and Chaos aren't fun opponents no matter which army you're running. Second, heavy shooting armies are a pain for any army that (again) aren't VC and Chaos Warriors, and third, Slayer armies kick butt. Especially if you get the Slayer-Fanatic Doomseeker units into play (I don't know if they brought them back for TOW or not). They're hard to deal with for a lot of armies (except for Wood Elves... stupid pointy-eared gits...) because they're like Goblin Fanatics but a LOT tougher. I wish you luck in tracking down an affordable Garagrim of Ungrim. I've been trying to scrounge up Grom the Paunch for years now with no luck. I've got 5th edition Azhag the Slaughterer, Morglum Necksnappa, and a few others, but Borgut, Grimgor, and Grom elude me.

I have Grom as he's one of my all time favorite sculpts. Only issue with his is him auto dying if he breaks from combat due to the banner, but so beautiful. Gorgut I had and like a fool I traded as I thought it would be easy to get him again. Foolish summer child that I was. Same with Borgut as I wasn't playing my orcs that much at the time. I don't know what I was thinking. I would love to get the old forest goblin units as well if I'm wish listing. You give me hope for my Slayers and my friends are fun people who allow proxies so I'll be able to use the rules as long as I have a suitably impressive model.

Meh, they're not as bad in TOW as they used to be in earlier editions (particularly 8th)... Chaos Warriors themselves have been largely toned down to their more balanced 6th Edition profile, as they should be, and what with most armies now able to have a chance at going first if they charge (or having access to a good few extra attacks if they don't), at least the rank-and-file of WoC are easier to deal with. Their characters remain a problem, but they are expensive at least and eat up a lot of points that could be otherwise spent on more of their elite troops.

Vampire Counts have troops that are even easier to deal with, but, like Tomb Kings, their resurrection mechanics have been decoupled from magic and can't be stopped now, so one has to think ahead in dealing with that. Focus firing on one particular unit at a time to overwhelm it and kill resurrected models quickly is probably the best way forward.

To be honest non-Slayer Dwarf armies should generally be able to deal with heavy shooting... partly by being a heavy shooting army themselves, and partly with their well-armoured shield units... particularly Ironbreakers who have a 2+ save now. Bretonnians can also deal with such armies through having lots of well-armoured and pretty fast cavalry units, and Beastmen have above average speed, ability to field lots of Skirmishers, magic that can push or pull the enemy out of position and hamper their shooting, and very reliable ambushing now, so shooty armies are less of an issue for them as well. Also Tomb Kings have the same ability to resurrect independently of magic as Vampires do.

Indeed they are back, they returned in the Dwarf Arcane Journal... though they're not simply tough Dwarf Fanatics anymore, but more like mini Slayer characters who can access Talismanic Tattoos and Weapon Runes.
