Well, I hinted in the painting resolution thread that I had a very large and ambitious project for the year. I am now in a position to begin working on it, thus I will announce it and use this thread for all updates as I work on it over the coming months.

From CMON, Cang the Implacable stands almost 2 feet tall. Each wing stretches the length of my forearm. It is an amazing looking model, and incredibly daunting even from the first stage of getting the pieces out of their packaging. Every piece is sealed in bubble wrap to protect it and it is a long and careful process to cut the parts out without damaging them. Then there is cleaning up mold lines without damaging the model, assembling it and gap filling nicely, and the scariest part... Painting! And finally I have to find somewhere to put it! :p

    The box:

    P2021297.jpg

All the pieces laid out. Note the High Elf archer I placed on the base piece for scale.

    P2021299.jpg

(photos are larger if you right click and click view images for those interested in a closer look at details)

Tonight, I'll begin cleaning up the parts starting with a bath in warm soapy water to try to remove resin dust and mold lubricant.

Aims to have it ready to assemble by the end of the week, and MAYBE assembling beginning on the weekend if I have time.

Looking forward to seeing this project come on.

Wow! I'll definately be keeping an eye on this blog, Strewart. The model looks incredible! And from viewing your painting of the carnasaur.. I can't wait to see this one! And my wife's reaction would be (in order): 1. Where are you going to put that and 2. Where are you going to put that??

Well, thre was a cricket game on this afternoon so I made more progress than I expected. I spent about 6 hours cleaning up the pieces, then two hours assembling, and an entire tube of superglue! I only need to add the head, wings and tail for the assembling part to be complete! From a dry-fit with the head, looks like there will be a fair sized gap unfortunately, so a bit of GS work. Overall it has pretty nice casting with only very small gaps to fill.

@BezZeMad; I won't be making it a zombie dragon, however, I actually have no idea what choice of colours I will use for it. My initial thought is greens since that is a 'classic' dragon colour, but I am really open to anything and any suggestions would be great. :p

@Lord Cedric; My thought right now is where the hell am I going to put it since it already won't go back in the case I had the pieces in! I dry-fit the wings to start measuring up spaces it might go. 1'8", or 50cm. Half a metre! It doesn't fit in any of my shelves in my room. I might have to buy or make a glass case for it to sit in. Then find room for the case.

I might edit in a photo with me holding the progress so far for another size comparison soon. :)

Edit: Here are the updated mostly assembled shots. There is a Chaos Warrior in each shot for size comparison. On the first photo, the warrior is a large scale one in grey. ;)

That is one bad mofo dragon and is going to be even more incredible once painted. I personally think you should try to do an orange (or pink :p) dragon. Don't see many of those and I'm sure it would look awesome!

I have a solution to your space problem. No need to worry with creating a case or stand for this monstrous thing. Once it is painted, just shoot me a PM and I will give you my address. Then, just send it to me. I have plenty of space for it.

How about you paint it entirely gold and use it as a weather vane?...

I think something like a Carmine dragon colour scheme could look very nice, either that or yellow

What colour is the Carmine Dragon? I haven't seen a painted version of it, always wanted to.

@Arli, there is a slight flaw in your plan. In order to ship it, I would need the perfect storage solution for it. If I had that, my problem would be solved anyway! :p

I always thought of it as a deep purple colour, possibly with a soft yellow underbelly (Stop that!). I mean cream underbelly.

Pity Forge World haven't got round to painting it up yet.

    CAAAAAAANG!!! :jawdrop:

That things a monster! Very cool!

From forgeworld, describing the carmine dragon: "The name Carmine comes from the dragons' scales, which darken from a deep, ruby red when young to a purple so dark as to be almost black when they age"

Good lord! I think you should get yourself a pedestal to put that thing on. Forget storage and painting, just be glad you don't have to feed it!

For colors, I'm voting red fading to orange below and yellow fading to green above, with black stripes. Gotta have stripes :)

Thanks for the colour suggestions so far, keep 'em coming! I'm so far leaning towards the carmine thought; deep red and purple. Trying to get some green on it somewhere would be pretty cool though! And T'hinker'er, good idea to get some stripes on it. I definitely will! I'm thinking I should try to learn a few basic photoshop skills and mess around with some schemes on there. I am also strongly considering making a snowy base, so maybe something that will contrast with the cold snow and grey brick of the base.

I have just attached the head, and to be honest I think the beast looks great without wings! The pose of it is really cool. I'm definitely starting to fall in love with the model, and its easily going to take more time than anything else I have ever painted.

I will try to attach the wings later tonight then take a few more photos. They will take a bit longer since they have a couple of large gaps and I want to get a bit of greenstuff into the join before gluing. Overall though, most of the gaps are rather small between pieces (couple millimetres at most) which is really good for the casting quality. There is still going to be a LOT of greenstuff work required before painting though!

A quick note on how the overall model feels, I am impressed and a bit surprised that it feels really really solid. I didn't have to pin any joins even though the main body section hanging off the tower must be 1-200grams (whole kit is a bit over a kilogram!) and is a really solid chunk of resin. I feel like if it sustained a bump or small drop, the only thing that might break is the end of the tail. I will not be testing that theory though! :p

Well coolminiornot made it, so its available from their store obviously. I found it cheaper at Maelstrom Games though, link. Especially since Maelstrom were doing a 20% off sale when I bought it. :D

Didn't get to do the wings tonight, I got busy then tired. However, tomorrow there is another cricket game, and given the last game allowed me to clean all the parts and half assemble it I am fairly confident I can do the wings and GS work and post pics tomorrow night! :p

    Nasty figure for the heart.

First it raises the heartbeat because of how cool it is......then you get the heartattack when you look at the price.

Looking forward to see it painted.

Yeah it sure was pricey. Took me a lot of thought to decide whether I wanted it or not. I feel like I got good value for money though. Not only is it a large and solid kit with a lot of resin, it is very nicely detailed and as I have said a few times it fits together really nicely for such a big model.

Wings are on! I mixed up a decent sized chunk of GS and put a lot in the wings and the excess in a couple of other places, but it ran out. I'll wait for it to dry for a while before doing more.

The chaos warrior is WiP, testing a colour scheme for my new chaos army. I mentioned it in a thread here somewhere, 7 big polar bears will grace my chaos army so hopefully I get time to paint a bunch of them and post pictures as well.

    Nice!
Have you seen the new Space Wolf riders that are coming out?
They might go pretty well in your Chaos army.

    Oh man, that is beastly!

Seeing the Chaos Warrior on his back makes me think you should make a rider for him (not glued on of course)

That is a fantastic idea! Knights or marauders riding wolves would look great. The Space Wolf ones might actually be a bit too big for them to rank up on 25mm bases though... Anyone know of a manufacturer that makes wolves about the size of horses? :)
