Hello all, this is a report of my first ever 1v1 8th edition game from November 2021. After a few months of planning and painting, my friend Dom and I were keen for battle! Dom also supplied the lovely terrain. We had played some 500-750 point team games along some more experienced players, but we were still learning the rules and made a few minor errors (particularly about standard bearers and fleeing!) But I don't think it affected the outcome much. My list was: 106 Scar Veteran- light armour, biting blade, enchanted shield, luckstone. 100 Skink priest- level 2. 283 Saurus x23- full command. 091 Skink skirmishers X13. 070 Skink skirmishers X10. 150 Bastiladon- solar engine. 200 Troglodon. 1000 total My friend's Warriors of Chaos list was: Sorcerer- level 2, filth mace, enchanted shield, 6+ ward save talisman. Chaos Warriors x17- shields, full command. Marauders x24- shields, full command. Marauder horsemen x5- javelins, shields, standard. Chaos hounds x5. Chaos Ogres x3- mark of Nurgle, great weapons. Total 1000 Two compact but fearsome little armies! The actual battle report is in three parts on my Instagram page. If you don't already use Instagram, I actually recommend it highly for Warhams related activities! I suspect many corrosive societal trends are exacerbated by social media. However my experience using Instagram exclusively for hobby has been entirely cheerful and positive. Part one: https://www.instagram.com/p/CV-mHkVBIGM/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= Part two: https://www.instagram.com/p/CV_i2fIhlRg/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= Part three: https://www.instagram.com/p/CWDrtOLhrZ_/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= Please enjoy. If there's enough demand from folks who don't like Instagram, I might take the time to copy things across to here. But it'll be hard to upload so many photos! Cheers, Josh
I haven't been able to access the instagram links yet, but from what I can see of the armies it looks like this should be a good one. The terrain is really nice too.
Cheers mate, let me know if those links work properly of you get the chance. It was a fun little game. The terrain is definitely great, made by the guy who painted the Chaos army. It's worth checking out his other stuff, he's a machine! Instagram username is: @thewhisperheads
Finally got the links to work! That was a fantastic battle, razor close all the way to the end. Those kind of grinding infantry combats are really what makes 8th edition Fantasy for me. The cohesive color schemes of both armies were quite impressive. I'd be interested to see if you found any success with the troglodon, as I've heard it's tricky to make work in most games. Do you have plans to play any larger games in the future?
Thanks for the feedback mate! That game was from November 2021, I've already played quite a few more games, up to 2400. Most with the Troglodon! I love using him and he's one of my favourite models ever, but honestly about as effective as everyone usually says. I liked him eating the Marauder Horsemen in this 1000 point battle though! I'll continue to post more battle reports up. Hopefully the format of these Instagram links isn't too inconvenient. I could copy all the text over with some of the pictures but it would take me a bit of time.
Model sculpture - 7/10 Lore - 6/10 Combat effectiveness - 4/10 Relative points worth - 2/10 It's a shame really. I'm with you on the model and even to a degree the Lore. It just doesn't make up its points, especially when taken into consideration with other units you could buy for the same points. He does two things worse than other units: mobile spell-casting point for Slann (too expensive) and monster for flanking (not enough attacks/general damage output).
Yeah the inefficiency of Troglodon is particularly crazy when you consider he's a Rare choice, and you even have to pay for the power dice channeling ability, for a total of 215 points. If he was a 150 point Special choice he might be a reasonable option, but even then a Solar Engine Bastiladon for the same price will be a more generally useful boye. I do love the model though, a 9/10 for me. I'm pretty happy with my paint job too, the largest thing I've painted for my lizards so far!
You've done a gorgeous job on this. A great paint job like thos really showcases the model and how amazing it is. Looks really incredible.
Thanks mate, I guess slowly highlighting all those scales was worth it! I am considering getting another box and making a Carnosaur, but without a Saurus on top. My gaming group seems fine with running a bare Carnosaur using the system for bound beasts from Storm of Magic. Not sure why, but I just love riderless monsters!
That's how I started running the carno too. You know my list, or at least I stated when setting up that this is a Scar-Vet on carno, or Oldblood in rare occasions. Nobody seemed to have a problem with that.
Looks cool! Really is a shame how bad the rules are. I have seen Chaos players use them as Daemons with some more spikey bits and conversions, found that that is a good use for the kit as well.
