An impressive display of self-control from someone who describes themselves as an emissary of the Dark Side and Chaos ;)

That... or perhaps once you have Tomb Kings and Chaos Dwarfs, why invest in a "lesser" army? ;):p;)

10 bases have their cork glued to them and are ready to go, with 10 more in clamps waiting for the glue to cure...

    PXL_20220129_005833543.jpg

Ready to start putting some Hobgoblins onto their bases. I have about 11 Hobgoblins partially assembled (heads + bodies) and cleaned of mold lines. I'll start with these and then glue their arms on once they are already on their bases. As for the bases I'll need to chip away some of the surface cork, followed by two coats of varathane varnish.

Since the Mantic models I'm using for my Hobgoblins didn't come with a musician or a standard bearer, I got working on those.

The musician was simple. @Mrs. NIGHTBRINGER had a great little Wood Elf horn that she gave me. It will make a fine "stolen" musical instrument for my Hobgoblin musician:
    PXL_20220129_061250546.PORTRAIT.jpg

I took a drill bit and drilled out the front of the horn (which normally ends in a flat bit of plastic) to make it look a little bit better:
    PXL_20220129_061317970.PORTRAIT.jpg

Next up, I made a standard from a WoC standard top and one of the halberds that come in the Mantic Goblins kit (the kit has enough bits to build all the models with bows, halberds or HW&S).
    PXL_20220129_061202271.jpg

I filed down the top and front side of the halberd to create a snug fit and greenstuffed it into place:

    A bit of progress!

    Thank you!

I've liked the results I've had previously... and it's much easier to produce than my glue+sawdust concoction.

With my first 21 + unit filler unit fully assembled I've decided to get started on my second unit. Cut and assembled some more cork bases, cut from sprue & removed mold lines from the first 9 Hobgoblins models and started working on the second unit filler...

This is the most fitting Marauder standard I have...

    PXL_20220214_065917960.MP.jpg

But then I found this random little Orcs & Goblin bit...
    PXL_20220214_065932033.jpg
This metal bit will be much harder to work with, but I like it better than the Marauder one above. The horns give it an (Orcish/Goblin) bull aesthetic which brings it inline with the Chaos Dwarfs worship of Hashut. Plus the crudity of the design is fitting for a sub-standard version of the more sophisticated Chaos Dwarf Infernal Guard bull head standard.

That looks very much like a 40K Ork Warboss Bosspole top, from before the model was rereleased in Finecast (I have a Finecast version - not bad at all mind, I seem to have been luckier than most with my Finecast models). The battered metal design wouldn't fit as well in an ordinary Orcs and Goblins army as the Marauder standard due to their low levels of ingenuity (apart from the Black Orcs, who brought a bit of their ex-masters' metalworking skills to the Greenskin tribes), but fits very nicely among Hobgoblins in the more industrialised Chaos Dwarf army. You can easily imagine some of them getting their hands on some rejected scraps of metal from the Chaos Dwarf forges and cobbling that banner top out of them in a (feeble) attempt at mimicking the bull iconography of their masters. The tassels also give a bit of a Hobgobliny feel to it.

Good find, I'll be interested to see how you get on fitting that to a plastic standard pole!

Excellent, that's exactly what I was aiming for. It's good to hear that my reasoning for it is sound!

Hahaha... yup, that should be an adventure. I'll also have to reconstruct the missing portion of the tassel using greenstuff.

Needed to do a little bit of grinding to get rid of some of the metal at the back of the standard so that I have space for shaft. Before:
    PXL_20220215_050601348.MP.jpg
    After: PXL_20220216_003236567.jpg
Next up up, I altered one of the Goblin halberds so that it slots into the space I created on the standard. It should make contact on three points (back of the standard, up against the pre-existing sculpted metal shaft bit and on the underside). What the halberd looked like before and after:
    PXL_20220216_003302464.PORTRAIT.jpg

I've glued it together. Just giving the glue some time to set properly. I've also worked on the musician, found an interesting little bit to make use of.

    More pictures to follow!

It's coming along slowly... but steadily.

    Still lots to do:
    • finish the standard (green stuff the missing part of the tassel)
    • assemble the next 6 Hobgoblins
    • cut from sprue, de-mold line and assemble the next 10 Hobgoblins
    • base all 19 Hobgoblins
    • make another movement tray
    • finish the unit filler

...and maybe paint some models eventually. :p

Very well thought-out, cutting off part of the bottom of the metal standard so that the plastic shaft slots into it certainly looks the most substantial (and satisfying for a perfectionist like me) way of fitting those two pieces together. I'm looking forward to seeing how the standard progresses!

Thank you my friend. Since the standard top is fairly heavy (for its size) and the plastic shaft is very thin, I was looking for ways to increase the surface area of the contact points. It will never be a super strong bond, but it is much stronger than it would have been otherwise. Normally I would just use a deep pin to pin the two pieces together, but the shaft is simply too thin to drill into. It seems to be holding to together quite well, I'll call it a success... for now!

Here we have the attached standard...
    PXL_20220217_005303585.MP.jpg PXL_20220217_005321179.jpg

As you can see, the bottom right corner of the metal standard needs some green stuff work to reform the missing part of the tassel...
    PXL_20220217_005411260.PORTRAIT.jpg

I also found an old little bell bit on a chain. I cut off the chain and attached it to a handle to create a handheld bell for my musician...

Pretty good by my usual (low output) standards! Nothing too flashy, but getting those core units built.

The first 9 guys are of the second unit are ready for priming/play on their freshly made movement tray.

Here are some close ups of the converted standard bearer...

At the moment he is extremely tippy because he is extremely top and front heavy due to the metal banner top. Once I get my rare earth magnets ordered and delivered, that problem will be alleviated.

At the moment I'm working on removing mold lines from the next (and last) 10 guys.
