Time to get some 9th Age discussions/polls going! :) As of our v0.9.2 army book, what are your feelings on the hardened scales upgrade for Croxisaurus units?

Do you feel that +1 toughness is worth the 10 pts/model cost?
How often would you consider running the upgrade versus running the unit without it?
What factors would you consider when making the decision (i.e. playing a specific army style, playing against particular armies, etc.)?

    Vote and discuss!

For me T5 for 10 points is an auto include. It will help you against alot of RnF, plenty of RnF has S4 options, cutting those wounds from 4s to 5s really can make a difference.

What I consider is: will they perform better with the extra T?
    1. does my magic phase compliment it?
    2. Does my appointed task for them in the list require it to work better?
    3. Am I fully invested in crox, or are they fillers?

    -
    1. With the recent changes, I am in love with path of Nature. It is again my go to path, and it righly compliments croe.
Did they end in combat with a S6+ unit?
Stoneskin them and use the already high T to buff it above the attackers strenght.
Are they being thinned out by mass shooting?
Summer growth them, and make that hardly earned damage be nullfied.

Also, if T5 is enough, give them halbers and benefit from Path of light.

    2. When I go crox, its for them to fight monstrous things. S5-S6 things.
How could I not invest in their survivability?
    +
    3. When I go crox, I max out with big units.
So to go all in in that 10model crox unit, I have to bumb them up to make sure my investement is well.

So for my waynof playing: if I bring crox, I bring them hard! Always!

It's pretty much an auto-include for me, although I still haven't used them xD

I'd probably go T5 with Halbard. S6 is enough since most infantry models are T4 with a maximum of 4+ save. Few units have better.

Given the way you aksed I would say "ALWAYS", why would I not consider upgrading them to T5?

When that is said, I think it fits them, fluff wise, to be more resilient than Saurus. I don't know if I would go with halberds though, as they, in my mind seems misplaced with the Kroxigor. Still I wouldn't completely write them off, as I like the option.

Sticking with the Toughness, I prefer to field my units as strong as possible, if they are fielded weak, they probably won't do their job. A lot like Phatmotha-phucka said:

They have always been, symbolized by 2 more wounds and 1 better natural armor save ;)
    Their skin just wasn't!

A fair point, for some reason, I had not really given that a thought.

I think the halberds vs. great weapons is an interesting debate. I think it really comes down to what you intend on using them for. Since their initiative is not all that great anyways, I prefer great weapons which make the unit a real can-opener & monster killer.

There are lots of GW elites that strike after the Croxies. Besides there are a lot of paths with initiative altering spells ^^
But yes it is to be considered what the goal is.

That is true, but by the same token, we could just as easily lay a defensive spell on the Crox to help them weather the storm and then strike back at S7. I try not to rely on magic because it is far from a sure thing.

That is perhaps true, but I don't like to create strategies that are highly reliant on it.

My issue with GWs is that they force our guys into a more specialzied role. You want those S7 attacks against super high armoured units, monsters and thing you can take a beating from and still rip them to pieces.

With Halbards you can for the most part still do that, but you can also attack a lot other GW units. If you can get into contact with 8 halbard croxies with any GW elites you'll do 12 wounds just like that. You can basically halve a lot of elite units just like that.

It makes them more flexible and open them up to more targets.

Magic is just an extra tool at your disposal :)

While that may be true, running Croxies into massed infantry is risky business (at least it was in 8th edition, it will be interesting to see how this plays out in 9th AGE).

I'd certainly see the upgrade as a worthwhile investment for 10pts/model, If only Woogity would make more of his gorgeous Croxisaurus models again! I seriously would field them in every list I could squeeze them into. :D

And with the improvements they've received in 9th Age, but core and special... you can!

I just wish I got those custom made Croxisaurus that Woogity made when he had them. Now I can barely find any decent finecast versions of the current model :(
