My gaming group normally uses the BRB terrain generator, but sometimes we've had issues with combinations of terrain that don't make sense. One day we serendipitously rolled a “haunted” board and we had a blast. This got us set on (eventually) phasing out the schizophrenic BRB terrain generator with cohesive sets.

The guidelines we established are that the terrain generators stick to a theme, not include any outliers, and be made entirely of BRB terrain with one minor exception.

We added rocky field (since we actually have rocky field terrain pieces, VERY simple to make btw). Rocky fields count as "flat" dangerous terrain to all units. They do not provide cover or block line of sight.

I've added lakes into several sets. This is technically a BRB terrain feature. Read the overlooked corner of BRB page 120, a lake is a "river" with a definite border. EDIT: I also added Inlet to the Sea which functions as a river that doesn't cross the whole table.

I've added generic impassable features. Raised features block line of sight and might be impenetrable jungles, giant ruins, or rock outcroppings. The far less common flat impassable features include things like piranha pools, lava pits, and deep chasms.

No terrain is mysterious unless I put the word “mysterious” in front of it. I figure rivers are never mysterious unless there is magical interference. Rivers of Light glow. Rivers of blood are reddish, slow moving and smell like blood. Necrotic Ooze are grey or green, smell REALLY bad, and flow VERY slowly. Raging Torrents can be heard before you can see them and it's called white water for a reason. Boiling Floods produce steam and warm the area nearby.
Marshes and Forests are “mysterious” a bit more often but even they are easy to identify from a distance more than half the time.

I plan to add more sets when the mood strikes me, I’ll post updates whenever I have three new sets. I’m running out of generic terrain set ideas. I don’t feel making “Ulthuan” since the realm is hardly uniform. Ditto for the outlying Empire provinces. I am open to take advice, criticism, or terrain set requests. As my immediate gaming circle weighs in and we do more playtesting, some of these may be revised. So far I’ve only played Badlands.

Terrain with extra special rules are very much overdone with dice rolls like that.

I'd much rather there were D2 special rule terrain pieces for every 1,000 points in a game. That'd make more sense, less to remember and get confused about, to me.

I agree with the basic sentiment, but I would prefer more then d2. Except for the Chaos Wastes, my terrain sets use far less weird stuff than the BRB. My features have more "ordinary" than other traits and most of the magic stuff is on 2, 3, 11, or 12 (the low probablity rollers).

I want to see the pieces or maybe a Lustria themed terrain piece comp? (I like terrain - it's cheap/free)

A less than 12x12, playable on terrain / building piece which suits one of the rule sets (even if by a different name)

Also, your Chaos Wastes have fallen to the "needs an FAQ side" with:
    7- Hill (1-4, 4-6 Temple of Skulls)

Are you angling for a job as a citadel rules designer? Moderator power has gone to your head!

Added six new terrain charts, seven if you count Empire/Brettonia as two (the only difference is you swap Sigmarite Shrines for Grail chances and Brettonia has a SMALL chance for magic lakes).

All the new charts are admittedly pretty similar, but I didn't feel like creating generic human lands. I used Empire/Brettonia heartlands as a base and figured the other human lands would have more nasty stuff in it. Also some have more/less hills, water, or forests. They have slightly different Steadfast Sanctums/Sinister Structures. For instance only Nordland sees Dark Elf raiders consistently so they have the only Altar of Khaine option.

I like the ideas you came up with for choosing terrian. I agree we needed more choices! The group i play against we always just setup a so-called themed board with the each other making changes till both agree it's right. But now, we will have a better way and a chart system to go by and it will never get boring again! :-D
Great job and good work! :)

Thanks! Well since I got a fan, I added four more sets I was sitting on.

You are welcome to mail me some of your excess terrain pieces :D

If you are talking about new terrain features, I think they need to be very obvious. An Altar of Sotek is on my to-do list.

Otherwise they are just cosmetically different. A forest is a forest whether it's coniferous or tropical. I plan to buy some cheap dinosaur skeleton toys and put them in a tarpit. It's a Charnel Pit in all respects, it's just a Lustrian Charnel pit. A Lustrian "Skree Slope" would be difficult terrain due to tripping plants rather than loose rocks.

Just added some new entries. Presumably the most applicable one to L-O would be the ruined Temple City.

I love this idea, while I am new to lizardmen I am a dab hand at terrain. I am working on a lustria board at the moment for my new lizards so I'll be sure to make at least three of each thing on that table so I can use it, great work scalenex I will have a great time with this :)

Nice idea. Reminds me of the old terrain charts in a previous version of WFB. Must show my non-lizardmen friends these charts. :)
