    Hi all,

I decided to kick off 2021 by starting a painting blog for a project I've been wanting to tackle for a long time. A friend of mine recently got out of the hobby and gave me several models — one of which was an old and damaged Kroq-Gar model — and so I finally decided to take the plunge into Age of Sigmar to start the lizardmen army I never got to collect in WHFB. (Yes I might get into WHFB later if I find a local group but for now the plan is Age of Sigmar since my local area seems pretty set on it.)

To start with I inherited the aforementioned Kroq-Gar, 10 skinks with boltspitters and clubs, 10 saurus warriors with spears, 7 temple guard (including full command), and a handful of extra skinks and saurus missing parts.

This is my plan to tackle the project of creating my first seraphon force:

    1. Restore and paint Kroq-Gar
    2. Restore and paint 10 skinks and 10 saurus warriors
    3. Paint temple guard (possibly convert enough to round out the unit to 10 as well)
    4. Create a seraphon themed display board for the army.
    5. Purchase the Skink start collecting box and paint up the contents.
    6. create additional seraphon themed terrain.
    7. Decide from there how to expand my force.

Without further ado, here is my progress as of Jan. 4:
-Stripped paint from Kroq-Gar and mount
    -reglued and pinned mount
-replaced Kroq-Gar's missing head and arm with saurus parts.
-Attempted to sculpt similar adornments on the head to mimic original model, and modeled a replacement back banner which I also did not have. I couldn't replace the missing hand so I gave him a shield arm instead.
-Fully modelled and painted a large oval base for Kroq-Gar with a significant amount of elevation to mimic the dimensions of the new carnosaur model.
    Next steps: Paint Kroq-Gar!

That is a nice friend you've got there.
    Great models to start with.

I love what you have done with Kroq-Gar, the restauration looks solid, he can pass perfectly as a Scar-Veteran on Carnosaur, and for those opponents that aren't strictly "what you see is what you get" It can also be an Old Blood on Carnosaur.
I like that you are going for the same height as the usual 'new' Carnosaur.
    Love the base.

    Keep up the good work.

    Grrr, Imrahil

Thank you all for the kind words! I haven't had as much time as I wanted to work on hobby stuff this past week but I've been able to make some progress and will post more pics soon.

Also, in the meantime, this arrived from ebay... It didn't have the terrain tutorials I was hoping for but reading this has been a truly welcome hit of nostalgia. I remember pouring over this exact issue as a kid, and now I'm kicking myself for selling my huge white dwarf collection for a pittance. It also does have some of the (5th edition?) WHFB rules for campaigns set in Lustria though and I imagine they could be adapted to AOS fairly easily. Forgive me if this is against forum rules but if it isn't and people are interested I could upload pictures of the campaign rules as they seem pretty fun. Anyway lots of inspiration and reading it is getting me motivated to paint up more lizardmen as soon as I can!

    Nice!

Sadly, I beleive that directly uploading the rules would create legal issues. Glad you found that though!

I have the Lustria rules as a PDF.

Excited to see the carnosaur! I favour the older metal miniature. :)

Ok finally had time to finish painting the carnosaur and take some photos! Here it is:

Next up is Kroq-Gar himself. I've got him primed and basecoated so it shouldn't be too long!

Also, @Lizards of Renown, that makes sense I figured it was worth double checking though, and nice Those Lustria rules seem fun! I might pick up a copy of the Lustria book off of ebay as well for those terrain tutorials. There's a certain magic to the old GW scratch-built terrain in my opinion.

Finally got Kroq-Gar himself painted up! Now I just need to add some plants to the base! After that I will be painting some skinks!

Well I was going to be painting up some skinks next but then I realized the blue paints I have were just off the colour I'm going for by a couple shades so they'll have to wait until my next order comes in. In the meantime, however, I made some quick terrain to work towards my jungle themed board!

    Some simple mossy ruins/barricades:
    141573016_410039693615048_2855631422207039599_n.jpg
    142057173_255191826160739_2187291905521703021_n.jpg

And a section of jungle (definitely going to be making lots more of these):

That's it for now! I will be ordering more paints for the skinks but I also have more terrain materials in the mail and I had a lot of fun making them so we'll see what I make next!

Long time no post! Still waiting on paints to arrive to confirm my colour scheme for the skinks but while I was fixing them up and giving them the right arms for the loadouts I want (blowpipe and shield) I realized I only had one shield so I made a mould out of sculpy and made the extra shields I needed out of epoxy putty:
    127729877_1140783599684058_4980936114644829717_n.jpg

^The First shield, needed a bit of flash trimming but otherwise I was quite happy with it so I made 8 more for the rest of the unit.

    147149232_151469913452428_3457696158497974019_n.jpg

Probably going to brighten up the colours a bit and use a turquoise wash when my paints arrive but I couldn't resist doing a test model once I had my shields:

    133807162_796301804653875_8260295819826096339_n.jpg

I also couldn't resist ordering a copy of Warhammer Realms: Lustria for those classic terrain tutorials and an old metal skink priest from ebay so those will be added to my project cue too. That's all for now, but I'm looking forward to painting up the rest of these skinks soon! Definitely one of my favourite GW sculpts of all time.

Fantastic work here on your Kroq Gar, and I look forward to seeing more of your jungle terrain as you produce it!

I am a big fan of the Lustria terrain book; it was the second warhammer book I ever purchased (after the Lizardmen rulebook of course) and was the initial inspiration for my own terrain collection!

Thank you! More terrain to come shortly! And nice, It really is a classic! I recently found a bunch of old 5th edition army books and have been pouring over them for the sheer nostalgia, plus the terrain tutorials and miniature galleries are still as relevant as ever!

When you say "terrain tutorials" you mean the book says how to make your own scenery?

Yes indeed, although that more goes for the Lustria campaign book than the army books, although my old Wood Elves book has a page about making trees which was handy! I guess it's more old white dwarf magazine that had the step-by-step terrain guides than the army books really. I definitely regret selling my huge collection of white dwarf magazines now!

It's been a while since I posted, life has really caught up lately but I've been chipping away at painting some skinks and will post pictures of those eventually. To break up the monotony of batch painting units though, I decided to test out the basing scheme idea I had for my temple guard and did a test model to show it off. Since I'm converting the last 1-2 models from regular saurus to temple guard for my 10 strong unit I thought a specific basing scheme would tie them in together as a unit and eliminate any confusion.

WIP of the base before attaching the painted model:
    165543786_167586371773553_1517289051426469851_n.jpg

    Painted model and finished base:

^As you can see above I was a bit hasty to take photos and there's a bit of white glue showing but that has since dried lol.

Enjoyed making the base and I used common cheap items plus flock to do it so if anyone is interested I can post a step by step tutorial when I make the rest of the unit.

Finally had the time to paint some more! Finished off my first unit of 10 skinks! Next up: an old metal skink priest I just got in the mail.

I gave the leader a red crest to make it a Sacred Spawning of Sotek like the red crested skinks in the Lustria campaign book.

I used the contents of a green tea-bag as leaf litter to supplement my flock.

It was fun adding some variation to the colour of the feathers on the shields and it gave me the idea to paint the shields themselves different colours as I acquire more models to differentiate between units.
