Yeah, it's a bi-product of Army Painter dip. They don't looks as glossy when they are on the table, and I think the camera flash really emphasizes it.

For Lizardmen, the 'wet-look', though not for everyone, is passable IMHO. I have seen it on some Empire armies and high elves, and it feels even more out of place and bizarre.

The best thing is that it took about two hours to finish the full steg and crew, and I can do a unit in a night.

Doing full detailed 'eavy metal style layering and shading always looks better, just takes much more time and dedication.

One day I will get all the painted stuff grouped up on the table to see how the army looks at a distance shot.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

Another update with the completed Engine of the Gods, and my Slann Mage Priest.

    The Engine of the Gods
I just flocked the base and glued in the other skink attendants. There are two bannerish dudes, and the one spearman tasked with guarding the ladder. The other attendant is the little guy holding the plaque.

I wanted to make this dude a little different from the usual paint style and still fit with the army. I did him up in Iyanden Darksun with brown patterning. He is on a custom base again from Scibor miniatures. The three horns underneath the palanquin are actually plastic ones, rather than the metal ones that come with mini. I used the metal one's in a different conversion. The little bit at the top of the palanquin is also from the plaque bits you can get from the GW site.

I plan to finish off two more Krox and the metal skink priest with the cloak of feathers. After that I am not sure what to tackle next.

Hehe really cool stuff, I especially like the Steg.

The priest is also pretty funky (in a good way) although I'm not sure I'm a fan of the brown (but that's just me)

I finished up the Skink priest with the cloak of feathers and another Krox, so here you go!

Skink Priest with Staff and Cloak
He is the same deal as the rest of the skinks in terms of of the white, bone, and green scheme. I gave him red eyes (the ranks and file are all green) and I decided to use a series of blues for the cloak with the red interior. I like the result.

Same as before. I put in a shot of him with one of his squad mates. I will get the 3rd done this week and then try to paint the Skinks that go with them to wrap up another full unit.

More to come soon! Stay tuned!

Hello again. I recently decided to take on some CoC and it has proven to take much longer than I expected. I did't realize how many small details are on the model. Plus it uses more colors than the standard rank and file. Anyway, I have one done, and I'm 75% through the rest of the unit, which I will hopefully complete before Monday. Here it is.

    Cold One Cavalry
I plan to keep all the 'beasts' of my army with the red scales theme, like the Stegadon. So I am keeping that theme across the Cold Ones as well. The saurus uses my standard scheme of bleached bone, white, and hawk turquoise. For the feathers, gems, Cold One eyes, and the markings, I used ice blue. I wanted the unit to feel different which is why I decided to put lizard style markings on the haunches of the Cold Ones.

I also took the shots in two different light set ups so you can see how in natural light the 'glossy' effect is severely lessened. I was fairly snap happy on this one, lol.

Thanks guys! It's just Gore Red, two thin coats, no highlights, and then an application of Strong Tone Quickshade at the end.

How did you deal with the gap between the saddle and the (skinny) CO?

Re: The Legion of Abraxas - IMG Heavy (update CoC - DE Cold One)

I cut down the saddle on the DE Cold One, and filed it down after that. For the Rider, I actually had to split the halves across the larger saddle of the DE cold one. This ended up with huge gaps in the saurus hip joints when I glued them in place.

I filled the gaps with green stuff and attempted to sculpt extra leg scales on the back and what not to cover the empty space. Between the legs, since it's so concealed I just jammed green stuff in and smoothed it out, no real sculpting needed there.

If you go back to page 1 & 2, you can see these models just primed with no paint on them, but I didn't take photos of the gaps.

In the following images you will see the green stuff gap painted, and one of them, the last one is with the quickshade on it. It's not the best conversion, but it worked.

Here is another example of a model without, and then with the quickshade applied to it.

Is the quickshade what is making it have that shiny varnish look? Have you tried applying a clear matte varnish over that?

Re: The Legion of Abraxas - IMG Heavy (update CoC - DE Cold One)

It's totally the quickshade that makes it glossy. I was going to try the matte varnish, but I didn't mind the wet look on the lizzies, as it's pretty natural for a lizardman to look wet. Though it doesn't make much sense on the armor and weapons.

Maybe my Matte Varnish is just old, but the last time I used it it made my dwarves appear dusty and gave them a fuzzy sheen.

I will roughly paint up and quickshade a test model, take a pic, then apply the matte varnish and take a pic and we can compare the differences. That should help me decide as well.

Re: The Legion of Abraxas - IMG Heavy (update CoC - DE Cold One)

I never thought of doing it like that. It's too late for me to change mine now, but I'll try it on the next batch.

I assembled the rider and then glued him on the cold one (after trimming the CO saddle), and am now dealing with the big gap between the rider and CO sides. I guess an extra thick saddle will have to do.
