Going to put these right here in the front as a marker of my current progress: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The beginnings of my Grottoguard and also Tlaloc the Lesser ready to begin the painting process!
The metal fig. is a Reaper mini I'm using for my fifth generation Slann named Tlaloc the Lesser, a very young toad who is guided by the spirits of his elders. On his right is the Death Mask of Cocijo and on his left is his arm and The Staff of Cyclones. I still need to get him a palanquin and I'm not sure what color to paint him up yet. I'm thinking about taking inspiration from the frogs and toads I can find locally. I plan on painting the Skinks in a green tree frog pattern so I'll try to steer clear of that scheme, maybe something more brown and earthy. I want to make the eyes really POP!
Great slann idea. It's different, and it looks like the bits you've got there could easily turn the frog into a good conversion.
The first couple of Red Tide saurus almost completed, just some touch up and that shield to put in place. You can also see the progress I'm making on my skinks!
I like the colours choices. The shield colour matching the skinks really ties the units together. How'd you get the bronze colour on the saurus spines and leg braces? Is that a GW colour?
The fluff goes when a skink dies bravely in battle his skin is used to adorn the shield of a temple guard in honor of his sacrifice; This way even in death the skink can continue to defend his Slann master. All my paints are GW but a lot are of the older variety, however that bronze is called Balthazar Gold and I think it's new. Today has been very productive!
The picture might be highlighting it more than real life, but it is probably a good idea to go back and green-stuff the gap between body and leg. It'll make a huge difference to the end result. Also, you might consider adding an extra highlight and wash to his scales, to add a little more definition. On a similar note, the silver parts and gold parts could probably use a wash, too. Beautiful colour choices though, and I like the conversion of the summoning skull-cloud-puff, it's a great touch.
The gap looks better from the top, didn't even notice it until I was posting the pictures, it blends in so well with the scales. I tried to layer up the gold from Shining Gold to Golden Griffin but I think the brush was a bit to wet and I didn't allow for proper drying in between layers so it all just blended together. The yellow on the back of the feathers also needs a good touch up after I secure a new pot; All of my models have unpainted eyes for the same reason. This is the first full army I've tackled so my painting skills are definitely still developing, thanks for the input!
Im loving the frog-sque shading to your skinks, its quite natural with the lighter green underside I've founding that a brief wash with imperial primer on scales will highlight the gaps and bring the scales natural details out?
